hard shifting 98 prelude

I just bought a 98 prelude from a lady who bought it brand new. The car only has 115,000 miles on it. She sold it because it was had to shift at higher rpms and tends to grind in 4th and 3rd when down shifting coming to a stop.

I have already changed the mt fluid with HONDA MTF to eliminate that problem. It seems to be shifting a little easier since then but still acting up...

At normal accelleration shifting at like 3,000 rpms everything seems fine. But the more torque or load you put on it in the higher rpms seems to be really hard to shift. I can actually tack it up like around 7,000 rpms from 1st to 2nd and the gears will not engage until the rpms lower to around 1,500 or so...

I think it might be a motor mount issue???

Could anybody shine some light on the situation.

Thanks

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

that is just a speculation and the easiest to do versus pulling the transmission. maybe your under filled the transmission. possible oil leak in there. i believe the transmission takes 2.x quarts.

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

I guess what Im trying to do is the external parts that may cause this failure. Somebody told me that a bad torque mount in the front or rear would cause a binding issue for the linkage(s)??

The clutch could be possible, but Im trying to do the easy stuff first. Haha
+ the clutch engages fine and doesnt slip or anything??? idk

I guess theres really no way of telling if the mounts are bad unless you actually remove them and inspect.

I just didn't know if anybody had a motor mount failure and had the same symptoms.

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

but you grind so it may be you clutch. If you double pump it while down shifting will it still do that?

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

ok just to give you some help ,the problem isn't mount's is in the tranny syncross' they are probably bad just get your another tranny you will be fine or if you know some one who rebuilds them then all you need is the parts, they are not that expensive its labor.Another option is junk yard or craiglist.

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

I dont guess driving the car with "bad syncros" would do any harm. Like I said, the car shifts fine under normal driving conditions. I guess I'll just drive it until I feel like spending the money to fix it. Thanks for all your comments and opinions.

+ oh yea i forgot to say that when Im in a low gear like 1st or 2nd I can jump the gas and you can hear a popping noise from the front end. Like a bad cv or axle or mount?? IDK

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

good deal.. I found a sh tranny on craigslist for like 250.00 ?? Im kind of scared to buy it though. Im sure that the cost of repair would be more than that. I guess it would be a chance I would have to take... lol

would a bad synchro cause any harm to the transmission to drive it like it is?

Re: hard shifting 98 prelude

Just to give an update on all this. The problem was not the synchros. But what I found wrong was a broke front motor mount! And the clutch needed to be replaced. ( after I replaced the tranny assuming it was the synchros) I guess you live and you learn.
