Spots of the rear of my car?

So black spots get all over the rear of my car after about 3 days of washing it. It comes back all the time. I've asked around and I was told it was burning rich. I had the CEL come up before but after replacing the Catalytic Converter and both O2 sensors, it's now gone now but the black spots are still there.

What can I do to get rid of this problem? Would the only way be to rebuild my engine? What should I check for? I'm just afraid that come when I have to do emissions testing, I would fail it. Would changing the exhaust help since the previous owner widened the exhaust to 2.5 inch but didn't change the muffler.

Re: Spots of the rear of my car?

I can do that, but it's literally impossible to keep my car clean because the spots come back every 2-3 days.

Re: Spots of the rear of my car?

alot of 5th gen run rich. mine has done it since i bought it new in 01. you will pass inspection with no problem as long as you don't have any cells lit up. 2.5 exhaust didn't help me at all . if anything it put out more sut.

Re: Spots of the rear of my car?

Well the person welded it on so that was pretty dumb of him. I'm thinking I'll just change it to a Greddy catback or something. Would that reduce it? My car is white so it's nearly impossible to keep it clean if all that stuff is on the rear.

Re: Spots of the rear of my car?

My car does this also and my license plate gets black as hell sometimes. I use one of those California car dusters.

Re: Spots of the rear of my car?

You could also try changing your muffler to a new one since that one has collected so much build up since it came off the showroom floor. If you go with a new cat back that would give you the new muffler and maybe take care of your problem. The way I look at it that car didn't always spit crap out of the muffler and if that is the OG muffler then it might be high time for a change..

Re: Spots of the rear of my car?

Sorry for bringing this thread back up but it's really irritating me. There has to be a way to fix this problem. I washed my car last night, drove for about 20km and now the rear of my car has an even coat of black spots while the front and side of my car is spotless.

There has to be some way to fix this issue. Fuel filter? Maybe my short ram intake? Distributor cap, rotor, spark wires? Should I change my oil with synthetic instead of conventional? It's bothered me to the point where I'm thinking of just selling off the car. I've even cleaned the EGR valve and ports.
