Oil smell through air vent

I'm out of ideas guys...

Here's the situation.Sometimes, not always, when I'm running the heat, A/C, or even just the fan, I get a smell of fresh oil (as opposed to burning oil) blowing. Goes away when I turn it off, and I'm not losing oil. I can leave it parked for 3 days and not a drop on the ground, and it's not burning anything more than usual. I have no idea what to check next so what do you guys think?

Re: Oil smell through air vent

Um....

Is there a quart of oil leaking in your backseat or something?

Otherwise, I have no idea. If your heater core was faulty, you'd be smelling sweet antifreeze, and thats the closest system I can think of that may possibly do it. If your oil was mixing with antifreeze I mean.

Re: Oil smell through air vent

is there some sort of oil (doesn't have to be leakage) around the intake?

Re: Oil smell through air vent

the oil pressure sensor on the back of the motor will leak right on the exhaust and leave no evidence of a leak . there is a little rubber boot on it . it leaks into the boot and now and then a drop will drip right on the exhaust . pull the boot back and see if oil is in there . if so get a new sensor .. i can almost promise this is where your oil smell is coming from .

Re: Oil smell through air vent

i get this all the time too but i'm not exactly leaking oil, just burning it really bad when i come to a stop. my rpm's get really low like i'm gonna stall, a itty bitty poof of smoke comes out from under the hood, and the rpms come back up and everythings fine again. i'm not saying that's what's happening to you but maybe your burning oil instead of leaking oil?? that might be what you're smelling. maybe?

Re: Oil smell through air vent

In many (if not most cases) the oil smell when the vent is on is from leaky valve cover gaskets. It's normal for any brand of car for the gaskets to leak the older the engine is. Having the gaskets replaced fixes that for many people.

As for me, I only notice it when the car is stationary and the fan is on. When the car is moving with the fan on and windows rolled up, teh smell goes away.

Re: Oil smell through air vent

Since you have a 99, have you changed your cabin filters? They can give off some pretty different smells when they are dirty. I know it's a longshot but just an idea. Better than febreze.

Re: Oil smell through air vent

I had the same issue, turns out oil was leaking from the oil cooler. Changed the gasket and cleaned the leakage, no more smell. This was just my issue, but it could be a possibility.

I would put money on it being this. A small leak in the rocker cover gasket, a bit of oil drips on to your hot exhaust causing the oily smell.
