Dead Prelude!

So I searched for a little but I didn't come upon anyone who had the same exact problem as me. I have a 98 SH (manual like all of them) and last night I was driving it pretty hard and it started dying if I wasn't revving it up and wouldn't start unless I hit the gas, I thought it might only do that when it was warm so I started it this morning and it started idling fine, 1.5k cause its cold here, but then once i start driving it a little it will start with the idle problem again and dye when I am not driving or revving up the motor.

Here is some history, I just replaced the idle control valve it has normal NGK spark plugs I have to do the port cleaning so I have the EGR unplugged so I can't tell if this is throwing a code, I use Fred Meyer gas that has 10% Ethanol so I was wondering if that might be a problem with it.

How is your oil level?

Could it be your fuel filter?

Keep us posted..

I was thinking it was the fuel filter, how hard is it to change that? and what exactly do you do?

Sorry I forgot to put oil was a little over filled last time I checked, I am gonna eat dinner and I will check it after.

Re: Dead Prelude!

Here is a link for you to check out:

Fuel Filter Changing/EGR Cleaning - Honda Prelude Forum - Prelude Online.com

A look into a few of these things might help to solve your problem. It doesn't talk much about the fuel filter so I'm not sure if it's in the tank or not or how hard of a job it is to do. I know my Accord starts to almost want to die when it is getting a little bit low on oil, that's why I asked.

Re: Dead Prelude!

Oil is fine. I don't know how to check my pressure regulator, or my check valve adjustment But I can look for a thread on that. I hope its not in my tank because I have a full tank of gas lol

Re: Dead Prelude!

so i decided to start it just for the hell of it and it ran without dying but was running crappy and all over the place at idle, then i let it run for a while and it got a little better then plugged the egr valve back in and it started running even better so i decided to rev it up and see if it would dye on its way down but it didnt. then i drive it to shucks and it was misfiring like a mofo and the codes told me so also,

p0303 cylinder 3 misfire
p0301 cylinder 1 misfire
p0304 cylinder 4 misfire
p0300 random misfire
p1399 multiple missfire's
p1491 egr valve lift insufficient detected
p0113 air intake sensor circuit high input

so i need help with the last one lol, and I am going to do the port cleaning sometime soon even though it is like 20 degrees out lol, and the second to last one might have to do with the port cleaning also is what I am thinking?

Re: Dead Prelude!

Hey bro my 96 SI was doin the same thing. It was throwing the same missfire codes. I took it to the shop and they did a compression test and found 1@150, 2@180, 3@90 and 4@90. After that they inspected my valves and found that all my exhaust valves were too tight. Long story short, they just adjusted them and that was it. It runs like a H23 should, with no CEL.

Re: Dead Prelude!

It only cost me $220, $190 for labor and $30 in parts (gasket ect) but maybe it'll be cheaper for you. But yeah my car would turn on and idle rough, it would boggle down and die after awhile if i didnt drive it. When I did drive, it would die on me at every stop or red light unless I would brake, give it gas, brake, give it gas, brake untill I came to a stop. I would have to keep my foot on the gas pedal and give it alil in order to keep her on. It sucked, it made me look like I didnt kno how to drive stick haha.

Re: Dead Prelude!

so yeah the egr cleaning is taking longer than i expected, figured out im going to need to drill bigger holes and use thicker screws because i have broken two screws doing it lol, i also dont think it is helping that it is 25 degrees, im gonna heat up the intake manifold before i try it again. ive been without the lude for about a week now, well ive driven it a little but im missing it a lot. hopefully the valves arent screwed up but im betting they are because my car is acting exactly how yours was, oh well i was needing to do this port cleaning anyway at least im not having to pay the $250 that the mechanic would charge me lol.

i would like to know if anyone knows how to change your cv axle? because my mechanic says im gonna need a new one and thats gonna cost $200 lol

Re: Dead Prelude!

cv axels are easy to change with a little know how. would suggest getting a ball joint seperator. you will have to remove the tire remove the nut holding the rotor to the axle. then seperate the lower balljoint and slide the axle out from between the wishbone. then go under the car and seperate the axle from the transmission. i did my whole front end replacing both axles all the ball joints and tierod ends in about 4 hours. its not to bad as long as you have all the right tools. also the having to give it gas to start it is a symptom of a blow head gasket. but you would more than likely have water in the oil. if nothing suggested help i would run a compression test.

Re: Dead Prelude!

the axles for my car were about 45 a piece at oriellys. you can rent a ball joint seperator for a 10 dollar deposit atleast thats how much it was 2 years ago.
