Door locks keep freezing

My door locks froze up today. After 30 minutes with a hair dryer I got in, went to Canadian Tire and bought lock lube & de-icer and sprayed it in my key hole. I went in my car again tonight and it was frozen again... Gahh!! Any suggestions to stop it from freezing up? I wish I could use my garage but it's completely full for my boat.

Doesn't that damage the chip in the key?

Is it stiff when you try to turn the key? If so, i don't think it has anything to do with the key hole. I think its the parts behind the door that are freezing up. Just what i think.

It is the locks behind the door. My remote unlock doesn't work and when I get in from the passenger side, I can't even unlock it manually.

Re: Door locks keep freezing

Well right now it's only about -10 degrees which is average for the Canadian weather. This is the first year with my car in the winter so I never knew if it happened last year. Weather over here goes down to -30 so I'm worried then... haha

Pluggin in your car at night so the block don't freeze, no thanks been there done that. South Dakota was the same kind of weather, just nasty! I stayed there for about 7 months and hauled ass back to Cali when the weather became unbearable.

Unfortunately that's not much of an option for me. I could move pretty much anywhere in Canada and it'll still snow:P

Re: Door locks keep freezing

I'm not sure about harming the chip, but I just hold a lighter to my key for about 20 seconds. 5 Minutes with a jet lighter would turn that **** red hot...

Re: Door locks keep freezing

I'm gonna be the first to say that I think heating up the key prolly isn't the best idea. There is a transponder in the key and you don't want to damage it.

I don't actually know what parts and pieces are inside the key, or if there is a microchip, but if there is, I know that microchips don't like extreme heat. Personally I wouldn't take the risk, because those keys are expensive.

If my lock is frozen, I just blow on it for a minute, and it usually thaws it out. But then again it doesn't get as cold down here as it does up in canada.

Re: Door locks keep freezing

Just install a keyless entry remote. When my key cylinder is frozen I just hit the unlock button once and BAM......the doors unlock. My problem is the whole paramater of the door freezing shut the whole way around. It feels like the outside handel is gonna break off from pulling on it so hard. Ice freezes up around the whole door.

I have a keyless entry. I think my actuator is too weak to unlock my frozen locks. lol.

oh...then that could be a problem. Id say the heating up the key trick would be the best way then. As long as you hold the key with your hand and heat it up while holding it ( just the last 3/4 of the metal part) It will not do anything to the transponder chip inside. If its cool enough to still hold (like, don't get it glowing red or start to melt the plastic)then it wont cause any harm. It would be like same if your keys were out in the sun all day in the summer. It wont hurt it. goods luck.

Re: Door locks keep freezing

they make this graphite for locks that you can insert in the keyhole. it's supposed to displace the moisture and keep the locks from freezing. go to your local autoparts store or homestore.

It's not just the key hole. It's acutally the whole lock mechanism that freezes. I have a remote unlock and it doesn't work as well.
