misfire help

so i have a 99 base model and i have a code for cylinder number 1 misfire...i changed my plugs, wires, rotor, and cap. My valves are all in spec but yet it still throws a cylinder number 1 misfire. Does anyone know what else it could be. Oh yeah the car drives normal but it insists that it has a misfire so its a minor one.

Re: misfire help

You say the car is driving normal, are you seeing any loss in power during acceleration? Check your oil and look for any water...

Unplug your egr valve. see if it changes anything.

your egr ports might be clogged.

Re: misfire help

Yea unplug ur egr valve. my egr valve ports were clogged up and it was making my cylinder #2 misfire. As soon as I unplugged it, problem solved, the stupid dealership didnt even know why my car was doing that. If ur car run fine its the ports in your intake manifold are clogged, but u will get a check engine light but it wount mess wit your cars performance. i had it unplugged for like 2 weeks before i had it fixed.

Re: misfire help

It cost me alot of money cause I bought a new intake manifold and I had my mechanic put it on. Try driving the car wit the egr unplugged, u will notice a difference right away. If the car runs mint u can get the ports cleaned for a fraction of the price that I paid.

Re: misfire help

thats what happened to my car. it would drive fine but the cel would come up. i replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and coil. then i unplugged my egr valve and it stopped. turns out my egr ports were clogged causing the misfire.

to solve this you can either clean the ports and replace the valve(if bad), delete the egr, or get a new IM.

I went with the new IM route because the new valve was almost the same price.

Re: misfire help

if you unplug the egr valve it should fix it, and if you take it to a mechanic its like a $250-400 fix, if you do it yourself its a couple hours and like $20 lol.

test the valve first, it may not need replacing at all.

Re: misfire help

IMO, deleting the EGR is unnecessary and has no benefits, although possible drawbacks. The EGR makes you hold the throttle open wider to acheieve the same performance, thereby reducing pumping losses. It actually helps power and economy.

And you really don't need to replace it. The biggest issue with EGR codes and misfiring is not the valve itself, but the ports.

Take the EGR off, test it. If it works, clean it, put on a new gasket, and reinstall it. Then pull the port plugs, clean them and reinstall new plugs. The whole deal will cost you maybe $20.

And it is rather uncommon to see an EGR valve go bad, so replacing it is a waste of money. But do whatever you want to do, you will anyway.

i agree w/ u.. if EGR valve or ports were the reason for misfire wouldn't u get a code for them too.. beside the misfire code? i think so.
