Lights dim in dash and so do headlights

Possibly Alternator?

My headlights and dash lights get brighter as I give the car gas getting out of first gear. Clutch pushed in, slowly let out, give gas, lights get brighter. So they dim with no gas in first. Is my alternator going?

Running any subs? If not, then get your alternator and battery checked.

Did you happen to just get under drive pulleys?

I think that's pretty normal to be honest. Mine does it too. The more RPM's the engine is moving, the faster it's moving the alternator. The faster the alternator turns, the more power it gives. Does it do it if you free rev in neutral as well?

Re: Lights dim in dash and so do headlights

Once again, unless your stuff in unusually dim, I do not believe this is a problem at all. It's simple logic really. Let's try again.

Battery powers lights
Alternator "powers" battery
Engine controls alternator output via rpm's
more rpm's = brighter lights

That goes for pretty much anything.

Re: Lights dim in dash and so do headlights

Car is designed so that idle rpm's properly power the alternator, so that this doesn't happen. Underdrive pulleys make this happen, I hated it and switched back, light weight ones of course.

I'm not saying that the alternator isn't properly charging the battery at idle! I'm saying it "over-charges" it, in a sense. Not a bad thing, it's just how the world works. Get in any car with an older battery or possibly even a new one, face it towards a wall or something, and free rev. WATCH THE LIGHTS GET BRIGHTER!

Re: Lights dim in dash and so do headlights

i do have aftermarket pulleys, but lights get brighter in dash if headlights are off in neutral no rev i noticed today. if lights are on, dash lights dim. Previous owner had a sub, the car is still wired for subs.

That's completely normal. The car figures if it's dark enough to need headlamps, then the dimmed dash lights should be clear as day. If this bothers you, just turn the little dimmer wheel (to the left of your steering wheel) all the way up until it clicks.

EDIT: I just realized that this is a 5G, not a 4G, so some, if not all, of what I said may not apply :p

Re: Lights dim in dash and so do headlights

Well I did stick this topic in 5th generation for a reason

But ill try out what you said tomorrow with the dimmer wheel. Doesn't bother me really just making sure the lude stays in good condition.

I do like tender loving care to my vehicles

I wasn't paying attention, I just saw it at the top 10 list. The dimmer wheel should still be the culprit. At least, that's how it works in a 4G

Re: Lights dim in dash and so do headlights

That's odd. Then again, I'm not really sure of the quirks and such with a 5G. Sorry man, hopefully someone else can help
