Because they are adapters and not a true short shifter.

Re: why exactly do short shift adapters suck so badly?

The only REAL complaint I've ever read about them is that they are sometimes made a little flimsy. Or that they break eventually, thus causing the suck factor to sky rocket among those who have no first hand experience with em. Honestly, if you put it on and like it then good for you, you have resisted the hype of teh interwbz. Although anyone with a real shortshifter (that does not include myself, so take all of what I am saying for what you will) will tell you that a true shortshifter is simply superior in a lot of ways. For specifics ask those guys lol.

Re: why exactly do short shift adapters suck so badly?

The major difference between a true short shifter and an adapter is often flaws in the design. Most adapters only connect to the original hole and then to the shift cable. Thus, it creates a pivot point that ruins the feel of shifting. As you shift gear the adapter rotates just slightly, causing a very notchy and difficult shift.

There are many more minor differences that add up to a subpart experience that ends with a whole list of reasons to 'just buy a real SS'.

Re: why exactly do short shift adapters suck so badly?

The short shift adaptors I've used (and fitted in friend's cars) don't suck. Yes, they dilute the feel of the shift (as per lilblulude's post) but in the end, you learn to raise your eyebrows at what is just a foible and move on. I wouldn't say the feeling is bad, it's just weird, like a duck-billed platypus is weird. Pretty soon you forget about it.

Though having said that, a true short shifter (such as the one shamelessly advertised a couple posts above, thanks mate - saved me searching for the link!) is a solution to the problem. A short shift adpator is at best, a band-aid or a quick fix.

No problem. I couldnt help myself there. It seemed appropriate at the same time as it felt shameless.

I still need to purchase a true SS from you. I have a DC adapter and it has a terrible feel to it.

Re: why exactly do short shift adapters suck so badly?

I think that's more because you bought an inferior componant than anything else. We've had no troubles with any of the Neuspeed ones fitted to local cars. Having said that we all agree that they are a band-aid solution to the problem, for the reasons outlined above.
