Double Din?

My workplace had an openbox Alpine INA-W900 double din for $299.99 so I had to grab it! (retails at $1200) so I'm looking to put this into my prelude.

I have an aftermarket Pioneer single din in there right now which the previous owner put in. How hard is it for me to take it out and throw this one in? I'm assuming I need a dash kit but do I need a wiring harness or something? It's also got navi so do I need to do anything else? Any information would help:)

Re: Double Din?

its not that hard at all.. our cars were designed for a double din stock head unit configuration. The only thing you would need a kit for is to trim it out... or if the HU is missing parts, like the side brackets, etc.
A Metra Brand harness will save your stock wires if you are just incorporating this new HU into the systems stock speakers. What year is your car? I can provide you with the harness model #

Re: Double Din?

I'm sure the deck is missing some parts, screws I know. It has the cage though.

I have a 1999 Prelude Type SH. It comes with all these wires. It was a wall unit/demo so they just pulled it outta the wall for me but it has the nav antenna.

Yes I'm planning on keeping the stock speakers for now but I have an aftermarket mono amp for my Alpine Type-R sub. That should be just an easy plug and play.

Re: Double Din?

Its a pretty straight forward deal. Ddins actually don't fit that well in our cars. I have a 97. Obviously they fill the hole but the opening in the dash is larger than double din. So it really depends on what your acceptance of "looks good" is. I had to grind on the trim ring before later becoming displeases with it and filling the gap in and custom molding to the radio.

I'm sure I'll find anything to look good since right now I have a pioneer in there and I don't think there's a dash kit. You can see the metal housing around it.

Re: Double Din?

It is really simple. Up until I installed my Double Din I had basically no prior wiring experience.
The harness can be easily found at a local autozone or autoparts store of some kind. With a wire crimp, cutter, and some butt connectors it's as easy as matching the colors.
For my installation, I just used the stock brackets from the stock radio, doesn't fit perfect but worked for me.

Re: Double Din?

I got the "best kits" brand dash kit because I guess it's what Future Shop carries. I believe I have a wiring harness from my previous aftermarket deck so I'm sure I can use that. My Navi is built into the dd so it's just the matter of plugging in the antenna and locating the rest of the crap. Shouldn't be too hard so I'll try it out tomorrow. If all fails, I'll go to BestBuy.

PreludeFX is on a distinguished road
Re: Double Din?

Hey I work for a shop, I did a dDin in mine and ya as nevrdun was saying it will take a little love. I just decided to build my own trim ring to flush it in. Also when you put it in keep in mind if the screen slides down theres a chance it may hit your gear selector when in park. But I believe if its a stick you should be ok.

Re: Double Din?

Alright. So with the help of my dad's soldering skills (I'm 17 btw) we managed to get things to go pretty well. The dash kit I bought didn't fit or something was wrong... it was crap anyways. So I used the kit that was inside it already (was good for double din) and it fit well.

The only problem is I don't have a trim that will fit in properly. I used the trim from the dash kit I bought at Future Shop and it fitted OK but when I open it to put cd's it'd get stuck so I had to leave it without the trim.

I couldn't/didn't have enough time to find the ebrake and footbrake line so I made a switch for them (was working at night in the cold... and I live in ottawa so it's winter now) so my video would work. Here's what my deck with the trim on looked like.

Thanks for all the help guys :) My experience on PreludeZone was definitely better then at Honda-Tech :P
