Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

just did the valve lash on my 5th gen, and intake cam seal. quieted the motor down a lot, but now i have an on and off rattle when i hold the clutch in. any ideas? i lost two of the seal caps but not in the engine bay, they were so old and stuck to the cover i doubt thats it.... the noise almost sounds like its coming out the exhaust pipe as well as the lower part of the engine bay. i can feel it in the clutch pedal as well..... i set the i/e lash correctly and checked twice, but it was getting dark outside.....dammit

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

mine makes a squeaking noise when the clutch is out and when you put it in the noise stops..looks like its coming from the slave cylinder

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

Does it sound like chatter? Bearing noise? Whining, squeaking, growling?

Be very specific, noise is very hard to diagnose over the internetz.

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

heres what i got so far....

noise is changing daily [yay], sounds like its moving through the exhaust system. since my valve lash adjustment, the engine noise has gone down so much, that now im probly able to hear more problems better.

when the clutch is in and i am already in gear, i let off the gas and I hear a high pitched whirring, almost like a wastegate or spool noise. the same type of noise is there now everytime i rev the engine up now.

the rattle only happens when i am starting the car, but it is intermittent. i press the clutch in and i hear a loose rattle, now more underneath the car.

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

scary day today. the noises kept coming, so i went to check my "handy" work, and couldn't fit the feeler gauge in between a single lobe. so i either tweaked out the valves tightening the crank pulley bolt? or i just blanked and somehow used the wrong feeler gauge?! drove at least 100 plus miles like that:(((

anyway all the noises are gone, except for the noisy loose valves. im a lil scared now, so ill have to let them chill and drive really slow for a while before i try to get the valve lash right on. are my lifters done? cam lobes are probly a little under spec now.....

gobble gobble

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

i got them nice and quiet today. the little rattle in the clutch is back, not as bad now. must have used the wrong feeler gauge when i checked my self. these days keep getting shorter, screws my outside garage up completely. but all the power is back, and no real probs now. I cant complain too much, its got miles on it so it is what it is right now. Sorry for bein vague and confusing as all hell.... i get a littl testy sometimes

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

Did you use the high or low numbers when doing the valve adjustment?

I'm trying to understand if the higher numbers give more power but less fuel saving.

Intake used: .006 to set .007 to check
Exhaust used: .008 to set .009 to check

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

cool cool, for starters i used metric numbers, and i ended up making my own feeler gauge set, with .15mm, .18mm, .20mm, and another set of three with very similar thickness'.

I set them loose because they shut on me completely, still confused about that. then i came back to it the following day and set them to a bit tighter then the average or mean for i/e. so if its .15mm-.19mm, use .17mm as a starting point. i used the 15mm first on the intake side, then tried to fit in the .18, if it fit barely, then it was on to locking the nut down and next piston.

i made sure to check again and gain, after every step. and once you are done, i would suggest checking them again, turning the engine over the same way.

When i had them set to something like .20mm or more, the power was gone completely. like driving an old civic. engine noise was awful, sounded like a digital atonal clusterf*ck. And it seemed prone to stalling, so im guessing not enough fuel delivery. that makes sense to my non PACT head.

After i had it set tight [like .159mm intake, .185mm exhaust], i got back the 100 horses i lost with them open. noise was gone, clutch or whatever noise is back but diminished. and maybe im just hearing more with less valve noise. I hear my dead exhaust too clearly now... But now you got me thinking about a new fuel rail

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

.006" = .152mm
.007" = .178mm
.008" = .203mm

i dont have a .009, its prety loose for the lude even on exhaust side. i think the DCs are .009

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

Does it happen with the car on, stopped, in neutral with clutch in? Then it goes away after it gets warmed up? Is it really cold out where you live?

If you answered yes to all of the above, then its normal. Otherwise, I don't really know.

Re: Clutch rattle after valve adustment?!

sounds about right, only when i have the clutch depressed tho. seems like when the valves are tight it happens, but its hard to tell. now my main thing is figuring out all these noises, i dont have a comparison 200+k prelude to listen to. with the valves tight [but in spec] i get a nice almost supercharger sound after 2.5k rpms, not sure if thats normal tho for this old a car.
