the only time you ever need a relay is when the wattage of what your using is greater than that of what the wiring was designed for ( stock blubs 55w ddm kits 35 or 55w ) your good to go ....

Re: question to hid users

I used one due to my passenger light going out, but after I installed the relay it's fine. Same thing happened to my girl's 09 civic. This happened to me personally so, relay or no relay, I just got it to be safe.

Re: question to hid users

Here is why you should use a relay and upgraded wire gauge. The continuous draw from your average HID kit is 35w. This does not reflect the start up current. A standard low beam halogen bulb is 55w/14v (running) = 3.9a Which is what the wires and relay are built/intended for. The startup on a set of HIDs exceeds 10a for sure. Once on they consume less than 3a. Will you ever have a problem? Probably not.

Nick you don't have a relay because you have OEM HIDs!

Re: question to hid users

Supposedly, the DDM slim kits draw less than 6 amps at start up. That's the kit I have and don't run a relay. Had them for several months with no issues

Re: question to hid users

For my headlights....NO bc they run on their own harness.

For my fogs...YES bc there's only one harness leading to light up the fogs!!! You'll def need one if your havin HID in your fogs or else they'll flicker and randomly 1 fog will either be brighter then the other or jus simply one will light up and the othe rwill be off bc the relay helps to balance the wattage going to each bulb evenly.

Re: question to hid users

Yes. I have always used a relay.

Way I see it, sure you might never have problems. But a relay is like 5 cents, takes a minute to wire up, is the CORRECT way to do it and gives you peace of mind. Why not use one?
