What kind of engine oil to use?

So I'm looking to switch my engine oil to royal purple oil but what grade?5w30?also the previous owner said he was using penzoil synthetic another thing is I heard 10w30 is good because the weather down here(new Orleans) is hot all year around..
I know this is something I should know but I just want to be safe because this is my first import car..
Car details
98
135000 miles on chasis and about 50-60000 on new rebuilt motor

Re: What kind of engine oil to use?

Same grade as you were using with dino juice -- IIRC, 10W30 for your car.

Re: What kind of engine oil to use?

5w30 is the recommended oil but 10w does the job just as well. +2 on the purple. I put it in last oil change and I never will again. overpriced and burns off WAY too fast. with castrol syntec I burned like half a quart between changes. with the purple it was over a quart in a weeks time.

Re: What kind of engine oil to use?

5 or 10 wt will both be fine. If you live in a warmer climate I would recommend 10 if you are having a burning issue. And as far as the Royal Purple goes, as I have had people try to sway me before. When the world's most elite cars come with it from the factory or they become a fortune 500 company, I'll stick to Mobil1.

5w30 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic. Try going to Walmart to get some good deals on oil. I just went to Walmart last Saturday and stocked up on some 5qt jugs of Mobil 1. It was about $24 for a 5qt jug of Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic oil.

Royal Purple is more of a Nissan/SR20DET swap thing...I use the Castrol synthetic on the Honda. :)

I use Mobil 1 5w 30 full synthetic, although I won't say if it's better or not. Mostly because I don't know.

Your car responses must feel like you're driving a Matrix!!!

The prev owner on my Lude had REG oil and it felt kinda sluggish but once i switched to SYN I felt the quick response. Yes the downfall is that it burns more oil but there is less of a strain on the motor.

In my opinion...

REG OIL
PRO = Less burning of oil
CON = sluggish response

SYN OIL
PRO = Faster response n better pick up
CON = Burns oil like a b*tch!!!

Re: What kind of engine oil to use?

Also depends on what you're doing with it. Synthetic is better for longer, highway drives. Conventional is better for traffic, start and stops and short, in town trips.

Actually the car feels great and it ain't no matrix that's for sure lol(actually have one in the shop right now) But I haven't tried using the synthetic so I can't say I know the difference. But like you said since it's so thin it burns like a mofo and costs more. Also with the synthetic being so thin I don't wanna risk it getting through the seals. So i'd rather save money and not have my oil burn like crazy. I am going to put in a sk2 filter next oil change as well.
