I've been looking into getting a whole new exhaust set up.
im just stuck on the cat.
should i go with a cat delete or a hi flow cat?
what's the hp gain on both (if anyone knows or has a dyno)
what're are the pros and cons?

oh and if there is already a thread on this, please send me the link and feel free to close this thread =P
thanks!

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

Test pipe(no cat)=like 1.5whp(maybe). It makes your car normally sound raspy, and it pollutes the air more. Im no tree hugger or anything, but polluting the air is still bad.

Hi flow cat=about 1whp. Normally isnt raspy and u dont pollute the air as much as a test pipe

wow so i guess there isnt that much of a difference then huh?
Im definitely NOT going for raspy though.
could you go into more detail about a decat? (first time i've heard of that)

im looking for a little bit of both. haha
but if i have to choose one i guess the sound. that is, if the difference between a hi flow cat and no cat really is about .5

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

Test pipe is a test pipe is a test pipe. They really aren't different. I have a resonator test pipe, which helps with the sound I suppose, because mine isn't raspy at all.

Mine does smell however, but I have other problems...

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

i would stick with a high flow cat - deleting the cat will give you problems with exhaust emmissions..i get it at every m.o.t test!!

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

Well on any pre 96 vehicles its okay since it usually is obd1. I feel a bit more power in the higher rpms with a cat delete.. but just the smell makes me wanna run away from my car after i park LOL

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

I want to do one of them too.. The shop said I should pick up about 15hp from deleting my cat(car not stock)

They don't test around here (wouldn't pass anyway bc it's obd1) but I think it'd just be too loud without a cat

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

I no longer have a proper cat and it runs fine, have to clear the cel every now and then but I drive pretty hard on road trips and pull down 29-31 mpg religiously. Smell and fumes are HORRIBLE! In a bit of a different money situation now so I may get a high flow cat this spring. If you have the option, get a cat. It's better and the right way to do it.

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

I'm looking to get a high-flow cat right now but I'm a little lost as to what to get since i have an aftermarket exaust that was installed by the previous owner. It's an RS-R but beyond that i don't know anything else about it, any way to figure out what to get for a cat?

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

I watched a back to back dyno test once, the test pipe made an extra 1.3kW at the wheels. So not even a single hp. A high flow cat made 1.0kW over the OEM one. Also, have you ever followed a car that runs without a cat? The smell is disgusting, not to mention ever so slightly toxic.

Running without a cat is not any louder than stock by the way. I replaced mine then test drove it, was dissapointed that it sounded exactly the same.

Re: cat Delete Vs. Hi flow cat

i would say you should be more concerned if your county/state does emission testing if they do go with the high flow cat if not then go by sound..as stated before me test pipe gives a raspy "tingy" sound the cat will give you a crisp "growl" and i am assuming that you dont have boost or a built N/A motor? so the test pipe really wont do much more than a high flow would
