Helping a friend of mine work on a 98 Prelude he bought a while back. It hasn't run since he got it. He was told it just died while it was being driven one day. Before tonight he'd swapped coils and distributors so those are likely out as the source of the problem.

Presently we're able to get sparks, but only for a couple seconds. We think it might be related to the immobilizer because as long as the green key light is illuminated on the dash we get sparks, but as soon as it turns off our sparks stop. The engine continues to turn over at this point, just no fire to the plugs.

When we first turn the key on we get no green key light. When we turn the key to run we get the green light for a few seconds. Once we turn the key back to the first position the green light flashes five times. If we unhook the immobilizer the engine won't turn over at all.

We pulled the computer off the mounting plate under the passenger footrest. It had some bright yellow numbers/letters written on it. My friend was convinced that this computer had come from a salvage yard because of this labeling.

We have no way to know if the car ever ran with this computer installed or not. Any help on what to check next? Is there a way to verify the computer has been flashed to match the rest of the car? Can we bypass or check the immobilizer somehow?

the blinking of the green key should confirm if you have the correct key in the car. I forgot the sequence of the blinks but a quick search would tell you. Have you tried using the service manual?

I'd looked at a couple of immobilizer posts and thought it might be working correctly, but the timing with the green key light made me wonder.

The service manual says the fuel pump runs for a couple of seconds when the key is first turned on and then stops. It's suppose to run again when cranking. Is it possible that the signal from the starter switch isn't working so the pump doesn't run when I'm cranking? The lack of the pump running would make the ignition quit, correct?
