Icon14 HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

Hey guys,

First post here. Saw a lot of active users so that is great. I do not own a Honda Prelude but my friend does. I own a 1997 Volvo 854R

My friend is trying to put HID kit into his car, I am doing some research for him and doing the install for him since I have done it on a number of cars already. I see that his stock bulb is an H1 (correct?) and I can get a DDM Tuning HID Kit for him for under $50 with lifetime warranty.

Is there a write up or DIY thread around the interwebs that is accurate and pertains to the H1 Honda Prelude housing? I dont want any surprises when I install them. I did look at the DDM Tuning for H1 and it made sense but with the searching I hear about a x nut and washer? Any help would be great!

He is going with 35w H1 5000k kit.

Oh and here is a pic of my car.

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

Haven't installed them myself, but on the DDM lights. I think you have to buy a conversion harness too for the plug to go from H1 to a 9006 ballast. I'm not positive on this, but double check it and make sure.
I don't want you to get done with the install, ready to plug it in, then need a $5 cable.

Will a 35w 5000k be bright enough for a low beam headlight?

Why would I have to go from H1 to 9006? I looked up on Sylvania light guide that 2000 Honda Preludes take H1 bulbs.

35w would be fine. The other option is 55w which IMO is way too bright for reflector housing and not running projectors.

Anyone have insight on the conversion and why I would need this?

n/m on the brightness of the 5000k, I just looked on their website and that would be fine. I was thinking it would have a more yellow, fog lightish look to it.

Here's the link to the install PDF. Step 25 mentions that adapter, but doesn't say if it's necessary or not.

Yeah, that is weird, why would I need a 9006 adapter for a H1 install?

I would email DDM about it. They might just come back and say "no our guides retarded. You don't need it."

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

if you are buying from ddm, just get the slim balast kit. it comes with everything you need and is not hard to install. that is the one i bought from them and i did not need to buy an adapter harness.

Sounds good... I looked at the H7 instructions (because my Volvo is an H7) and it says the 9006 connector also.. so it is either a type or that connected is literally called a 9006 connected and not referring to the bulb type.

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

Rofl, they clearly have the H1 size on the site, why would you get a 9006 haha? Our size is H1. Both high and low beams are H1. H1's are kinda of a pain in the ass to do, but once you figure it out it's not too bad. You just have to take off the weatherstripping piece, the pull the metal wire out that goes around the back of the bulb.

ugh, you need to read better. The reason we talked about 9006 is because the instructions say 9006 when installing H1 bulbs and H7 bulbs, I know he needs H1 bulbs. My 850R is 9006 so maybe you read that wrong also.

Ah, just downloaded the instructions and that is weird lol. All it seems like is just the plug from the hids to the ballast so it should be nothing to worry about. Gotta remember they are also doing it on a bmw so go figure. But yea, I have a ddm tuning kit on my other car and everything is straight forward, took like 5 minutes to do. Eventually I will be getting a high and a low kit for my lude. And btw I would love to have a volvo s70 T5 for my dd lol.

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

OK so update. I got the H1 kit for his Prelude and I have some issues.

First of all the + and ground wires are stuck in some plastic housing and has a bunch of goo in it... so what to do?

Also when I put the H1 bulb in there it wont stay in there, the clip I slide on to it does not get in contact with the base of the H1 HID bulb and it just slides out... can anyone help? Do I need an adapter for this?

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

Hmm I'm a bit stumped on the + and ground wires, can you get a picture of that?(is it a relay kit?) And for the clip not coming in contact with the base that does not sound good, maybe bend it so it does? It's a bit tough for me to try and help since I only put the ddm kit into my accord which is a 9006.

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

i just installed the same thing, but 8k HID's. if there is a plastic washer, which i had, i just bent it in a way where you pull the stock clip down and the way the plastic washer is bent keeps everything tight. its not too hard, just need to improv

I am getting my buddy to get a picture of it, it looks likes two wires black and red going into a little black box and then that goes into the back of the H1 Bulb holder (not the bulb itself)

No plastic washer at all. I am thinking I could put a rubber gasket in there. My concern is how hot the bulb in that area would get on the back end of the bulb. If it is going to get super hot then I would go with metal but if it is cool and does not get super hot I would go with rubber.

Ok, local dealership sells the X-CLIPS for $6.50 so we can't beat that. So he is picking those up this week. But I am still stumped about where the wires go ... these

Those go into the flat holes in the light sockets like the picture above. If it doesn't turn on, then switch them

They slide in pretty easily but also fall out pretty easily... the grounding end is a little bit smaller than the + end. What should I do SAFELY to keep them in SAFELY and also reliable for my friend. Thanks!

Re: HID Install H1 for 2000 Honda Prelude

So this is what the piece looks like... it is a loom wire coming out of the car and before it hits that little black box it has two wires, ground and +. What is the best way to hook up those wires from the car to the HID H1 kit.

^^^^ This plugs into the two prong OEM Bulb holder and then that plugs into the H1 bulb

I'd say put some electrical tape over them so they don't fall out. I gotta get me some hids so I can see lol.
