97 2.2 questions

I just bought my 1997 lude over the weekend for $500. The auto tranny has the "sticky" gear issue, and not 100% sure what to do about that yet. The 2.2 has 175xxx on it, its got new cam seals, new water pump, and a new timing belt. Other than the transmission, the car runs awesome. Theres an antifreeze leak somewhere, I haven't found it yet, but no smoke, no low coolant. Obviously I'm keeping the motor until it completely craps out. I'm Just wondering if this engine still has a long life left in it, like is it worth keeping and building on, or should I replace it? Also, I've heard of head gasket issues, something I should consider? Anything at all I'm missing or need to worry about with these motors?

Re: 97 2.2 questions

I think the engine life depends on the owner. Was the previous owner taking the time to do oil changes on time, checking fluids, replacing malfunctioning parts, etc?

My 99 has 173,000 and is still going strong with good compression. I've only had her for the last 63,000 and I've been on her like white on rice!

My tranny is also the same mileage as my engine and it has issues at times. Check the solenoid on the transmission top front, it has a double screen and sometimes gets clogged. If it’s clogged I would suggest cleaning the screen with cleaner, then performing a transmission flush. This runs about $70.00 for the oil from Honda and a few hours to fill, drive, drain, and repeat.

Re: 97 2.2 questions

Well you did say it doesn't smoke and you said something about a coolant leak but then you say you have no low coolant, that just sounds contradictory. Anyhow your sure you don't have water beeds or a white milky looking stuff in the oil? If not then you don't have a head gasket issue. As for the motor these motors are known for lasting eons. As long as the regular maintenance was performed like dr2day said. If you just had the timing belt, water pump and tensioner done then I would say your in great shape. Sounds like you need to check on your cooling system (why your leaking) Where do you see evidence of the leak?

Re: 97 2.2 questions

Just remembered you should adjust the valves to be on the safe side of things and you might get better gas.

Re: 97 2.2 questions

Ok forgot to mention the valves were adjusted, this plus the the stuff I mentioned above were all done less than 5000 miles ago, so awesome I'm glad I'm good there thanks. As for the leak, Im not seeing drips or anything. The thing is I can smell antifreeze strongly when the cooling fans kick on. And there's no antifreeze in the oil.
