Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

I have this problem with my electrical system suddenly loose power for a split second while driving. I noticed it at night in the highway when i saw my receiver suddenly turn off then on again by itself. I thought it was just an isolated incident.

Later on, my speedo needles came down abruptly and back up again. Sometimes at the same time, the headlights (total HID conversion) will go from bright white to amber color for a split second. This happened maybe 4 times during a 80 mile drive. But, I never loss engine power or have the car stall/completely shut down. Any ideas fellow luders?

FYI: My car is a 2001 SH. Hardly driven (used it for 3000+ miles in the past 6 years). First time taking her out for months and the Yellow Optima battery is 100%, always hooked up to a Battery Tender. I have a 4-channel amp to 4 speakers, no subs. I only had the volume at 10 at that time. HIDs installed 2 years ago with no issues since installation.

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

id start by checking your battery cables and making sure they're on properly

Sounds like your ignition wire could be fried. Have you taken the lude in to have the free ignition wire replaced?

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

more importantly....Have you done anything under the dash or under the hood recently?

Has it been wet/raining where you are?

Is it just the dash lights or does the entire vehicle lose power? (headlights, engine, etc)

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

How hot/cold, humid/dry has it been?

Main relay?

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

@dr2day: No. What are the other symptoms of a fried ignition wire?

@LilMsPrelude: No recent mods. Nothing like this happened until that night. I only noticed the speedometer needles, radio and headlights. Interior lights never went out, no power loss to the car. Air conditioner was fine.

@havikprelude: No rain. Dry but mild weather. Car is always stored in the garage. What exactly will happen with a bad Main Relay?

Hmmm... only thing I can think of was that dip I encountered before going on the freeway. My lude bottomed out. Maybe it loosened something? Come to think of it, the after market battery terminal I have didn't have a good grip on the negative post, but if that's the case, my entire car would of lost power, not just those particular components. I'll check it...

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

We asked about weather because it can affect electrical circuits, specifically unprotected ones, like uncovered wires and stuff.

Bad main relay will cause the car to not start, or randomly lose power during driving.

It's a very common problem in these cars, and I think it costs maybe $15.

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

Ah. Never rode my lude in the rain or when it's wet outside.

Possible poor grounding maybe? I use an after market terminal with two 4 gauge wires grounded to the engine, and two 8 gauge wire to the chassis.

The stock ground to the chassis had 1 wire going to it, but will two 8 gauge wires have a negative affect? I connected both 8 gauge wires to the exact location where the stock ground went to. The front frame does fell hotter to the touch now. Should I remove one of the wires and ground it to the engine as well?

Re: Intermittent Electrical Power Loss HELP!

All dash lights/electrical circuits are attached to the fuse block under the dash by two Large harness connections.

I do not know much about the 5th gens.... but I'm pretty sure it is a blue harness connector towards the middle/top of the fuse panel with about 18 or so wires going into it that could be loose. My 4th gen did the same exact thing and I discovered this connection was loose.
