weird squeaking noise

whenever i turn my steering left or right i hear this loud squeaking noise. i'm not sure if its related to my power steering leak. any help is appreciated. i know its hard to diagnose without being here. if it is related to the ps leak then how do i go about fixing it. i checked it out a while ago and the reservior looked fine and the hoses looked fine.

usually a sign that it's low on PS fluid, or the pump is on its way out

Re: weird squeaking noise

Is it a squeak, or a whining noise? usually a p/s system will make like a whining noise when it is low on fluid. i just had a major squeak on my Accord- it was more like a loud creaking noise when i turned the wheel. It was the left lower ball joint. I replaced it and the noise went away.

Re: weird squeaking noise

its more of a creaking noise. i had my friends brother check out the car and he had said he thinks its the ball joint but he needed to jack up the car to really diagnose it. i've been thinking its the ps because its been leaking for a while now.

P/S belt is getting wet which makes it hard to move. If it only happens when the road is wet that is.

Re: weird squeaking noise

I have the same thing.
You need to replace the drive axle.
Something about it being worn down and it's starting to rub.
They go for about $100 something then $40 core at autozone, not that hard of a fix, just a pain in the ass to put it back into the transmission.

Re: weird squeaking noise

Probably the mouse in your P/S pump that runs around its wheel and turns the pump. I'd feed it before it dies, then you'll lose your P/S.

Re: weird squeaking noise

My LBJ did the same thing before it died. if it dies at low speed you can look forward to buying a new axle , LBJ and hours of frustrating work. Fix it before it dies on you, it's a dangerous pain in the butt.

Re: weird squeaking noise

Look at em...if they're flat as a pancake in the middle with any tears in the rubber, they're bad.

Other wise you need to jack up the front and wiggle components, and see which ball joint has wiggle to it.

Although there is a slightly different procedure for the tops and bottoms, the difference is where you jack from depending on whether the one your testing is a loaded or unloaded ball joint. Although I forgot how to tell the difference so maybe try google or maybe someone else on here knows.

Re: weird squeaking noise

1) Visual inspection, just like havikprelude said. Torn boots = replace.
2) Mechanical:
Lower BJ: Grab the sh** and yank. If the LBJ moves, you need a new one.
Upper BJ: (This is off memory, I dont have the guide in my hand so 90%) this one you need to really pull on (might want to consider a crowbar.) Any play means it's done, I think. If you pick up a Chilton it describes the testing. Of course it's Chilton so you will prolly be told you need an $800 tool to test. ODK, but it looked like ANY play meant it needed replacing.

If you have the cash (I dont,) a shop will do an LBJ for 300-350 (yes, that much of a pain, the part is like 45 lol.) IDK how much upper is, but it shouldnt be nearly as hard.

Re: weird squeaking noise

I just did mine in my accord. Lower left one was shot. Cost me $18.00 for the ball joint and about and hour and a half of my time. Doing it on the prelude is just about the same thing.

Re: weird squeaking noise

Oh yea and I forget if you have a base or an SH but an SH has 4 lower ball joints in total, not two.

Re: weird squeaking noise

The 4g has only one lower ball joint at the bottom of the knuckle connecting the steering knuckle to the control arm I think. There are other joints, but only 1 LBJ and 1 Upper BJ.

After mine blew I rented a ball joint press (see if you can get a Honda adapter, it should help.) It was an epic level pain in the a$$. After you pull the axle (no small chore itself) you have to get the LBJ out which will require removing a steel ring on the back of the knuckle that I think holds the bearing in. Once that's off you have to remove the spring clip (use spreaders,) then get the LBJ out. Once it's out CAREFULLY put the new LBJ (new, autozone $44) in WITHOUT tearing the boot. Use the LBJ press to get it in, which can be a pain cause it doesnt really fit around the knuckle or at least mine didnt.
