Mystery White Smoke

This happens once every key cycle. Key cycle meaning from the time I start the car til the time I shut it off. This only happens once every key cycle.

I'll run the car for a bit, it'll get warmed up, and then randomly when I come to a stop, it'll blow a large bit of white smoke out the tailpipe. After 30 seconds or a minute, it'll stop and won't happen again.

It repeats every key cycle, and when it happens I can smell the exhaust, smells nasty.

Now I have my theories and some additional information, but I don't want to bias you guys. Throw out your ideas, and my next post I'll include additional info to help narrow down the problem (or confuse you more) and I'll throw in my theories and such.

The winner gets a cookie!

Re: Mystery White Smoke

White smoke is coolant leak, probably in the head gasket or this may be out of know where but you cat burning off something a animal puts in there, that would be tits if you had a dead splitner from TAMNT stuck in you exhaust

Re: Mystery White Smoke

Well I don't have a cat, so yeah...

Here's the rest of the info.....

-There's no coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant.
-The white smoke does not smell sweet (like coolant)
-I found a couple drops of coolant on top of my VC, with no visible leak anywhere. Just chillin next to the "C" in vtec.
-My coolant level is the same. Maybe a fuzz lower than usual.
-If you put your ear by the IM you can hear a constant hissing sounds, like a vacuum leak, but I haven't found any vacuum leaks so far.

One possible theory, is that a gasket in, on or around my IM is starting to go (IM gasket or TB gasket maybe), dripping coolant into the IM. There is a coolant line running through the IM, and our theory is that it gets sucked into the IM very slowly, and when you turn the car off the coolant system is still pressurized so it continues to leak while its off, then when you turn it on IM vacuum just sucks it all in at once.

Our theory anyway. I haven't done any research yet or looked at any diagrams, so I don't know yet if there is even a coolant line or gasket that could possibly get coolant into the IM, this is just what we came up with after a few minutes of spit balling.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

actually that is possible but i dont see how its getting into the cylinder unless valve seals are going bad. Theres a part (i for got what its called) but it sits on the bottom of the intake manifold for cold starts it warms the air up, they normally go bad and your idle goes from like 700 to 3000 and just bounces.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

You mean the IAC, which is possible, but my idle is fine. And what I mean by coolant leak into the IM, is its getting sucked into the IM which obviously goes into the cylinders...thats whats supposed to happen on the intake stroke, it sucks in air from the IM. Just minus the coolant, thats not supposed to be there.

Oh, and I haven't really noticed a difference in performance.

And for whatever reason....the white smoked stopped. Hasn't happened in a couple days. Not really sure why, maybe it being so cold out has something to do with it.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

If you still have that hissing noise, try to see if you have a vacuum leak and spray some intake cleaner or throttle body cleaner all around where you hear the hissing with the car idling. If you hear the idle change at all for a second or two while your spraying...air is getting in somewhere its not supposed to and you have a vacuum leak somewhere. I use this trick all the time at work and it diagnoses bad intake manifold gaskets or cracked/dry rotted rubber hoses you would never see with your eye for me all the time.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

Ya it kinda has a rough idle, so I'm prolly just gonna replace all the vacuum lines. Although I'm thinkin it might be an IM or TB gasket.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

That's what I'm saying. Spray carb clean all over and see if the idle smothens out a little. That way you can find the source of the leak and repair it, rather than just replacing All the hoses.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

Dare I say.. it's getting cold outside.

All cars omit steam from the exhaust pipe when the car is cold. then as is warms the steam dissipates and can't be seen. If this doesn't stop... my friend you could have a blown head gasket.

Re: Mystery White Smoke

I get what you're saying, I'm going to get carb cleaner and test it today.

Also it does smoke/steam a bit when I first start it up in the morning when its cold, but that goes away.

This happens at a different time, even when its really hot outside. It's kinda difficult to describe, but I think I described it well enough in the first post.

Although the mystery white smoke has stopped. It hasn't done it in the last week. So I dunno what the hell it was..
