Top Engine Clean

I did a search and my own post comes up. So does anyone have a DIY on this subject.

Years ago they used to clean the carbon deposits on the valves by diconnecting the exhuast before the CAT if it had one. Then heat the motor to operating temperature. Then spray cold water down the intake from the carb. It was said that you could hear the carbon pinging against the metal underneath the car.

Now a more modern car like this one has fuel injection and a throttle body and MAP sensors, what would really happen if you sprayed a mist of cold water down the throttle body at a steady RPM of like 3K to 4.5K? Would this break the carbon deposits off the valve and allow it to seat properly.

I have troubleshot the hell out of the electrical and fuel and I still have a misfire on Cylinder # 1. This is the only other explanation.

Just wondering if anyone else has tried this or not. Or if they tried to fix this problem without pulling the head.

Thanks
Rob

Re: Top Engine Clean

seafoam.

1. start your car and have someone sit in it while you do this so they can blip the throttle to make sure it doesnt die.

2. remove brake booster hose from BB, so that you can suck fluid into IM. i'd do about half a can at a time. the car will try to die as you do this so just have your helper blip the throttle to make sure the car doesnt die.

3. shut car off and let it sit for about 5 min or so.

4. take car on backroads and rape on it. car will blow insane amounts of smoke, which is perfectly normal.

I've heard mixed reviews on what this does to gaskets and seals, anyone care to share their opinions?

Seafoam

Sea Foam | Gasoline Engine FAQ's

I think if someone has a gasket or seal failure after use had a problem before they used the product and it was just the freeing/cleaning of deposits that caused the already damaged gasket/seal to fail.

I guess by BB you mean brake booster and IM you mean intake manifold. Is typing really that hard or can we blame this one on texting? ha ahha

Should I disconect the CAT from the exhaust? so as to not let all the pieces of carbon land in there to block the screen in the CAT

Re: Top Engine Clean

Okay so I find the vacuum line that runs from the brake booster to the intake manifold, is there only one line that does this? Or can someone take a photo to show the line and where it connects to the brake booster, I'd hate to get the wrong line.

oh, also forgot to ask so by 1/2 a can at a time, do I go ahead and give it the whole can but just in the two increments?

Thanks

Done it to my car a couple of times and have had zero problems.

It's just easier than having to type everything out. I mean really what else would those things mean? Don't tell me everyone has lost every ounce of common sense.

I usually do the half a can and then pour the rest in my fuel tank.

Re: Top Engine Clean

theres this stuff called OTC deKarbonizer they sell it at napa it runs about 20 bucks a bottle but it works way better than sea foam

how ever you need a special tube thing that regulates the flow to pour it in my friend picked his up for bout 15 bucks. If you add it like sea foam it will hydrolock your motor.

They also make fuel injector cleaner. like the de karbonizer you cant just pour it in. it needs a special pump.

sounds good guys, my buddy has a 98 that keeps throwing a cell that I want to use this method on. when we installed the new header I could see all the carbon buildup in the motor

Re: Top Engine Clean

Well the code is clear, but seems to still have a slight mis, but it has always had a rough idle I was about to do the EGR valve cleaning right before this happened I just wanted to get this fixed before I started on that. I may even still replace all vacuum lines before I start the EGR cleaing. Have to charge the phone then I will try and upload the video.

Re: Top Engine Clean

Just a heads up, I still have that Lucas fuel injector cleaner in this tank I only had a bit less than a 1/4 left so I filled up at shell w/ 93 octane. They say too much injector cleaner and running short trips really have an adverse affect on the upper end of the motor as far as carbon deposits are concerned.

I wish they had guys like you here in Roanoke, the lady today at the service dept. was clueless. I wanted to know if it still felt a bit rough could I repeat the steps I did do clean it even more without damaging anything. I do have over 160K miles so I really should start looking for a backup motor and start building that one. Or find a low mileage one and swap mine out and build my motor. I don't know.
