6th gear needed!

I am new to Preludes as this is my first one and have been driving it for about a month now. So far, I like the car, alot but, noticed that during highway cruising at 60 mph the tach is at 3k rpms and 70 mph is around 4k rpms. This to me is pretty high and can't be good for MPG even though I am averaging around 27.5 MPG on one tank. I am thinking that if we had a 6th gear (cruising) the r's would drop to around 2.5k rpm and we would see a MPG increase, possibly to 30 MPG average. Does anyone know if there is a 6 spd tranny for the H22A4 that just mates up with no issues? Will the AP1 6 spd tranny work our application? Just curious as I don't think I have come across anyone doing this. Thanks in adavance.

Re: 6th gear needed!

I've seen an S2k gearbox with a custom bellhousing mated to a turbocharged H22A once.

Then again, it was in a 240sx. LMAO

Back to the topic at hand, it won't happen. The only remotely possible way to do this would be with, say, a K-series tranny (with a modified bellhousing, of course). Unfortunately, being that the H and the K rotate opposite of one another, this would result in a car with 6 reverse gears and one forward gear. lol.

Wow, nice link dude. Lots of work into that. But to answer the question, with money you can do anything..

Re: 6th gear needed!

I've had my hands on quite a number of vehicles in my short time of driving. From an '83 Datsun 280ZX 2+2 Turbo to my '94 Honda Prelude VTEC, it's been a wild ride.

No, and even if you did find one all the 6 speeds out there have a closer gear ratio and would probably just be about the same in 6th gear. I would figure out a way to change the gears in your exsisting tranny once the thing is ready for a rebuild. You'll loose out on a bit of top end power but yes you would gain MPG.

Re: 6th gear needed!

You can always swap your 5th gear with an F-series accord tranny.

pretty sure there is a 6 gear tranny out for the h22. and yes, rob is right, the gear ratios are even closer so it turns out the same in the end. plus if i remember correctly they cost around $10,000. totally not worth it
