JDM H22a/5 speed swap question

Okay so i've been thinking about getting a JDM h22a engine since mine is nearing the 200k mark. I also have the stupid auto tranny. It was replaced three years ago and just failed on me again. I replaced it with another auto tranny for about 1k.

I noticed on some of the JDM sites, they sell the h22a engine and tranny and ecu all in one package for about 1800.

what else will i need to do the swap if I buy the jdm engine, tranny, and ecu package?

and based on your 5 speed swap experiences and knowledge, about how much more will i have to spend on parts/labor excluding the 1800 for the package?

Re: JDM H22a/5 speed swap question

Not sure on prices for labor, but you will need to change your water pump, timing belt, oil filter more than likely some sensors, depending on who you order from. With just parts a couple hundred bucks. Labor anywhere from $500-$1000 it really all depends on your location. Just call some shops. I'm going to lean more towards the $1000 mark since they will have to swap your auto tranny to a manual.

Re: JDM H22a/5 speed swap question

I was gonna do this at one point but decided not to cos of issus with the shop that was gonna do it. But from what I inquired, labor was normally between $1000-$1500. As long as u buy the parts that is. I I were u I would just buy the obd2 motor and save the hassle. Google "rompirates resource thread" and he has a list of every part u need for the 5spd swap

ok thank you so much for the replies and info. :)
and do you think i could get the obdI then replace the ecu with the obdII from my current motor or should i just go with obdII from the start?

and i heard that obdI gives you more power, but it makes it harder to pass smog?

Re: JDM H22a/5 speed swap question

as far as ecu i would just use the ecu that comes with the engine, and as far as smog i couldnt tell you we do have smog tests where i live

Re: JDM H22a/5 speed swap question

U can get the obd2 motor and run the ecu that came with it, and if u wanna convert to obd1, just buy a conversion harness. Then switch it when u need to pass smog. But I honestly wouldnt convert to obd1 unless u have more than i/h/e.

Edit: Also. Being obd1 just makes it more tuner friendly. If u wanna stay obd2 tho there are options like a full stand alone or piggy back system. A popular one is the aem ems
