possible to link horn to doorlocks?

it really bugs me that my car makes no sound when you lock the doors. i was thinkin maybe i could run a splice from the door lock power wire to my horn? so when the doors lock the horn beeps. will this work? if not what can i do? beside install an aftermarket alarm system.

Re: possible to link horn to doorlocks?

this is easy to do, the only trick is to make sure you are isolating one signal from the other... we do this with diodes. (they will only let power go in one direction.)
you can attach a wire from your Negative door triggers (two of them-- see my Alarm Install Thread) to a relay. BUT! Make sure you install an isolating diode in series on each line before it gets to it.

Terminal 85 Ground signal from door locks
terminal 86 from a fused power source- always hot
Terminal 30 Chassis Ground
Terminal 87 to Horn Wire - you MUST install a diode on the factory wire BEFORE attaching the relay to it.

What year is your lude? I can probably draw up a simple schematic for you?
You could also make your parking lights flash with this same set up.

Such a neat installation...could have used you when we wired my ex-roommates horn to his brake lights after his wedding...took awhile to hide the jumper wire. :)

Re: possible to link horn to doorlocks?

Why's that, I think the horn honking sucks. I just have mine flash the parking lights. Plus I can hear the door locks they're loud as hell.

Xplain....

this statement is empty

I provided a "simple," safe, and reasonable solution for someone with limited electronic(s) knowledge.

Re: possible to link horn to doorlocks?

Why do aftermarket alarms always say not to wire directly to headlights? What's the worse that would happen?

too much current -- you will fry the internal relay trying to pass enough "juice" to make em work.

ALWAYS ALWAYS use a relay when tapping into a hi current circuit.... even when you are using a negative trigger.

Re: possible to link horn to doorlocks?

Would an additional relay be needed before or after the internal relay?

I don't plan on doing anything to my setup but just have wondered about it for quiet sometime. Factory alarms like on my cobalt would turn the lights on so I thought maybe it was something to do with aftermarket trying to cover their butts from suits.

Re: possible to link horn to doorlocks?

Most, and I mean MOST, aftermarket alarms use a negative trigger because MOST cars use a ground "signal" to trip it's relays.

As long as your car is like "Most" cars then no, you do not need to add an additional relay.

-this goes a LOT deeper than we are delving in to here.
