Dirty mechanic ruined my life

i am a 17 year old kid who owns a 1999 prelude with 200,000km. i bought it about 6 months ago and i never knew when the timing belt had last been changed so after saving up i finally decided to change it. I only had $300 so i tried finding an alternative; mobile mechanics on craigslist. i contacted this dude and he said that the most id be paying was $300, parts and labour. after being with the guy for about 3 hours he started to seem a little sketchy but he sounded like he knew his s**t so i trusted him.

Long story short, it took him 3 days to do the job because the crankshaft bolt was not coming off and on the third day he asked me for an extra 80 bucks which i did not give him.

When he finished the job i attempted to turn on the car but my battery was dead.

Today i finally got the chance to power up my battery and when i turned it on it was making this VERY STRANGE NOISE. it almost sounded like it was going in reverse and when i started driving i heard a clicking noise. There is no Check engine light.

I am really worried and scared someone please help. i have no more money. the only money i have is from my student loan.

i have a sound clip of the noise, if anyone wants to hear it send me your personal email and i will send u it.

what should i do?

Damn that was a scketchtastic story. I'm not trying to be a dick, but you get what you pay for. Like said before...have a trustworthy mechanic take a look at it and see what he says...then save up your money again and have a real mechanic fix it.

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

Not to be an ass but even at 17 dont you know any friends that have brothers, fathers or uncles that are either into cars or have a reliable mech nearby that they go to?!?!

Wha happen to ur parents?!?! You cant tell me that they nvr drove in their life time to not have a reliable mech by this time in their life. I jus dont understand why you didnt ask around with friends and family for a good recommended mech to check n wokr on your car before resorting to CL!!!

Save up or borrow from your loan for now and ask ur friends n fam for a good mech to check it out and get it done right this time!!!

And lesson learned...no more CL for you buddy!!!

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

sounds like he prolly used the same bolt on the crankshaft that he took off. Thus causing it to not be on very tightly and the flywheel might be loose and making that noise. Just a guess but if this is the problem it could eff your whole engine.

good luck

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

Here is a classic case of blaming someone else for your problems. He didn't ruin your life. First of all, it's a car.... secondly YOU HIRED HIM!!! Even after you thought he was sketchy!! Really?!?!?! You were asking for it the second you started.

So your situation calls for 1 thing and only one thing. Take it to a shop, a real one. Where someone decided to start a legitimate business and trusts the people he hands a paycheck to to further his business.

Not trying to be a douche but it seems in this day and age kids need a more of a kick in the ass and less coddling. I feel for you. I've been on the downhill end of bad situations. Just gotta chalk it up as experience.

Being an automatic there are two things here. First, it doesn't have a flywheel, it has a flex plate. Second (and this doesn't pertain to just automatics), hammering on the bolt (depending on in which direction he hammered) could have done some serious damage. Is there any way you can use your phone to take a video and upload it to youtube?

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

The worst thing I could see happening is if he hammered on the crank bolt's head, parallel to the shank (like with the length of the bolt), you'd need a new bottom end. Best case scenario, the bolt and pulley is just loose. There's a lot of inbetween scenarios.

you have any idea how much the worst case scenario would cost to fix?
and when i look at the engine the bottom pulley is very loose. if that helps?

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

Sounds like the bolt that holds it on probably needs to be tightened. I don't know much about the crank pulley on an H22 because I've never had to mess with it, so my knowledge is limited there.

Like said before...best case scenario, your crank pulley needs tightened. Worst case scenario...your crank/rods/pistons might be fawked up, you might need machine work, blah blah blah. If that's the case, be prepared to drop $1000 EASY. And that's $1000 if you can find parts for real cheap and a cheap (but reliable) mechanic.

i work on cars every day and there is no 1/2 in impact gun that will take a honda crank bolt off ( i own whats suppoed to be the most bad ass impact gun made ingersol rand titanium and it wont take them off ) . there is a special tool ( that i own ) that inserts in the pulley and then you use a long pry bar to break them loose
.

dont get me wrong the guy was a tool . i can do timing belts on hondas in 2 hrs with all pulley changed and the water pump

it sounds like the crank pulley is loose . take a 19 mm socket and a long breaker bar insert through the wheel well liner ( hole with little tabs ) and tighten it up ..

.

Nvm. I'm an idiot. I was thinking of a different bolt. lol. I still need to get me that nifty little tool.

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

Sorry about this, but I think some of the dramatic thread titles lately are a little humorous... I think I saw one about the "worst day if my life" or something that sounded like a good day compared to a lot of mine... :P

For the money I have had to spend in the last year (most of which I borrowed from my parents... I am 28, but they are understanding and great people) on my wife's Lyme disease (not covered by insurance), I could own a new 370z...

even if you have you have to replace your motor, you came out way ahead of me...

my point... your situation really sucks, but keep things in perspective... my wife's PICC line got a blood clot and had to be pulled sticking us with enough IV supplies to buy an h22, a tranny, and some other stuff... and that is just a tiny fraction of the expenses...

you live, you learn (if you're smart)... good luck with the car, and don't give up on her, you will love the lude.

Dude everyone is being a dick. The kid made due with what he had. I can say I have done stuff more stupidly. If feel for him. How about some encouragement and not puttin the guy down.

Hey man sorry to hear about that. I cant tell you what I think the problem is but I would take it to someone like other people have said. I know you dont have money but to take it to someone and have a bill at a decent mechanic shop is a lot better than having to pay for a whole motor if you let it be.

Keep us posted man!

I've done the same. With school sometimes it's hard to get enough money to do things properly. Thus why I traded my prelude (which I really regret) for my GSX (for sale) because the piston rings were gone and the cylinder walls were needing re sleeved. True I could of saved up for this, but I go to school every day and work almost every day and i HAD to have a DD. But, good luck guy. Just do your research and look around locally for a certified mechanic.

Hey man sorry to hear about that. I cant tell you what I think the problem is but I would take it to someone like other people have said. I know you dont have money but to take it to someone and have a bill at a decent mechanic shop is a lot better than having to pay for a whole motor if you let it be.

Keep us posted man!
thanks for understanding man.
and thanks to everyone else for trying to help me out.

hopefully the pulley just needs to be tightened, even though those crazy noises and clicking are scaring me

I had same problem before but i did not change the timing belt.I was waiting on the traffic light and the noise start. The bolt was loose and i had to retighten it.If you was in my city,I could take a look what is going on,but in yours case u have to go somewhere to recheck everything. If the bolt is loose and u want to tight it by your self, put some locktite on it.

upload it to youtube or imageshack or any other video uploading sight and post the link here. its very easy. usually you have to be a member of these sites, but it doesn't cost anything.

Re: Dirty mechanic ruined my life

I love how the opinions are all over the place. Some are taking the tough love route, and some are taking the coddling route. Either way, there are WAY worse experiences that you could experience. Everything will be fine, just have a little patience. We've all made our fair share of mistakes, and some have paid more dearly than others. ****, I made some retarded ass mistakes when I first joined the Prelude community. To start off with...I paid $6g for my first Prelude (1996 GBP BB1 w/121k miles), when I shouldn't have paid more than $3,500 for it given it's condition. After that I had no clue what I was doing when it came to cars and manages to screw a few things up that ended up costing me. That was just the start of it, but I wouldn't change it for the world because I've learned so much by making the mistakes that I did. I hope someday you can look back and say the same thing.

Things will get better, just be patient and keep your head up.
