1997 Base with persistent P0420 CEL. The Cat is bad. No doubt about that. Would you guys go with a replacement Cat or straight/test pipe and have to live with or address the CEL?

Oh yeah, I forgot to say emissions really isn't a factor in Alabama. No testing.

Re: P0420

Cats are for bitches, but being that you're OBD II, not having a cat might mean a permanent CEL. You can always try to find a way to fool the computer into thinking there's a cat though.

Re: P0420

I have heard of doing such as that. But doesn't seem to be a long term remedy for the bright ass CEL light. Unless someone knows of a specific route to fool the CPU?!

I think they cal it an o2 sensor extender. It's like a spark plug non-fouler.

You could always build an emulator. I had a friend make one from stuff at the shack for about $15. it simulates the o2 sensor so no cel.

Just buy a hi flow cat. A test pipe isnt worth the .5hp it will give u. And it normally makes ur car sound like s**t.

Yeah, I think the Magnaflow Hi flow cat is a better choice.

Yeah. Kinda ironic that the 0420 is the only code that keeps coming back. hehe

The license plate on one of my cars was THC 420. It was pretty ironic, especially considering I registered it on 3/11/2006.

Trying putting a couple drops of Clear Eyes Advanced in the EGR and spray the inside with Ozium and i think your code should clear.

I only get $12 an hour. Started at $10 in February of '08. I consider it FAIL. However, it's all I've got at the moment so yeah lol.

Re: P0420

I priced the two gaskets for the CAT plus the 6 bolts from a local Honda dealer. They wanted $84.56 plus tax. $92.17 after tax. What a rip. The CAT was $83.00 and that was shipped. Another reputable vendor anyone? This converter has been my first automotive purchase online. Oh and it was from these guys http://performancepeddler.com/detail...CT_ID=MAG22644. Maybe I should have thought about this earlier and tried to order from them. Although they probably wouldn't have had the parts.

Re: P0420

RockAuto Auto Parts You can get away for like $20 there.

For the forum's reference:

The diagram and part numbers are from Walker. They make a lot of exhaust stuff. Also, this is for the 5th gen. I don't know how much of it is the same as a 4th gen.

All I see on Rock Auto is Exhaust Pipe Flange Gasket, Exhaust Manifold Gasket, Exhaust Flange Stud and Nut, and Muffler Gasket. Am I missing something there?

You'll need to open the Exhaust Pipe Flange Gasket. It's got all the different gaskets on the piping. Refer to the picture I posted to see which gaskets go where.

Re: P0420

From this it looks like I would need parts listed as numbers 15 and 17. But where are the bolts and nuts? Am I just blind? Sorry, I have been sick for almost 2 years and functioning on very little food and sleep on a daily basis tends to reduce my mind to Sh*t. Oh and no offense about the change of sites. This is the only site that I have read about. Seems more straightforward and concise to me.

Part Detail

I guess the KA 4AT is correct. 1997 Base Auto (I Know).

Re: P0420

You can get the hardware from the local auto parts store in the "Help!" section. If I'm not mistaken, your hardware is going to be m8x1.25 flanged head bolts and nuts.

From the website you posted, the bolts are number 4 & 5. It appears that number 3 is the catalytic converter as a whole unit with the bolts.

Re: P0420

Just ordered the gaskets. A mechanic friend of mine suggested the same about the fasteners. He said maybe even a hardware store with the correct thread and pitch. I know of a really dope place and that is all they sell. My dad used them for many years for construction purposes though. But come on, $10.00 a bolt. Correct me If I am wrong but it isn't really a vital connection anyway right? I mean just to keep every tight and together with no leaks. High heats considered a really top notch bolt should work. But not for f**king $60.00 just for some bolts. What a joke and a really bad one at that.
