More grinding noises

read the other threads and they didnt quite match up.

my 2001 SH has a distinct grinding noise coming from the engine bay and it only happens at a certain rpm and lasts for a second. roughly 2800. also i can feel vibrations in the gas pedal when the noise happens. sometimes the vibrations continue through the gear but i can barely feel them. any help would be app. cause i think its getting worse....

This is happening under a load? Not only when switching gears and clutch is in or just been let out?

What kinds of things have been done to your 01 SH? Anything recently.... New clutch, timing belt job done etc.

Now there is a common ABS self test that happens shortly after the car starts to move, and my 5th does this and I hear an ever so slight noise and a vibration in the gas pedal. Could this be the same thing your experiencing?

Re: More grinding noises

yes happens when i get on the throttle at almost any amount. new clutch couple thousand miles ago but its my daily so within the past couple months. and its been going on for a lil while. happens when clutch is out and i am accelerating. every gear @ roughly 2800 rpm. have not done timing yet. i just hit 85k miles. i know i need to get it done soon. for the ABS what is this test? it doesnt happen when i brake. only accelerating.

Only when you start the car and just start moving within seconds of starting the car.

Did you put one of these Stage 2 or 3's? Might just be clutch chatter, if you only notice it after changing gears.

Yes it is about time for that first timing belt job.

hard to say what it is, good luck hope you find it fast.

Re: More grinding noises

ya i put the ACT extreme 6 puck. i dont think its clutch chatter because ill get that sometimes if i dont do a smooth shift and i can pick that sound out pretty easily and its been like that since day one. im hoping its not something in the tranny? idk muck about tranny's but hopefully not a syncro or final drive is worn down....

Re: More grinding noises

i had a noise like your describing around 2500-3000, might be your belt tensioner since you said you haven't changed it. Mine also happened under load and would not do it in neutral. So might be that.....my tensioner died about few weeks later.

Well with that extreme of a clutch, probably over this little bit of time might have put undo stress on the tranny (is it stock?) My brother had a toyota truck and he put a pretty heavy clutch in it and blew out two trannys and a rear end. Maybe take it by and have a tranny service done on it.

Are you guys running the manual tensioner? Yeah most of these hydraulic tensioners seem to crap out at about 110 to 120K. I just did the second timing belt at 156K water pump bearing was making noise but also the mechanic showed me the tensioner and it was leaking fluid so only a matter of time and it would have gone. He said it must not have been changed on the first timing belt job.

That could be it.

Re: More grinding noises

There are about a million threads about this. If you only hear it when winding down not up through the rpms, it's likely the tensioner. More likely though is either the exhaust manifold heat sheild, cat heat sheild, or the header brackets themselves. I have this same exact problem on my 4th gen, with a manual tensioner. Do a search... The exhaust reaches a specific resonance at that particular rpms...and causes loose bolts, shields and brackets to rattle.

This is also true as my shroud vibrates at like 2600. Hmmmm, my cat shroud is gone, I think I remember seeing a screw missing on the corner of the shroud near the bend to get around the gas tank. D@mn I forgot when having the new exhaust put on, hey thanks now I remember to get that thing fixed its driving me crazy.

Re: More grinding noises

it doesn't do it loosing rpms. only gaining. and under load. its def not bolts or heat shields because this is a very distinct grind. im def getting the timing service done asap. hopefully that cures it.

At least get a fluid change on the tranny as well, just a simple drain and refill with new.
