Icon5 Need Help (Stalling Problem)

Hello Everybody,

I own a 2000 Honda Prelude and have a few problems with it. I am by no means a gear head so any help is greatly appreciated. When i start her up in the morning it will kick a white/grey smoke out of the tail pipe(stops after about 1-2 minutes). Also it idles rough, almost like it can barely keep it's self going. If you press on the gas(in neutral) and then let go it will just stall out. If you let it idle without pressing the gas, after waiting about 5-10 minutes it will drive all day with no stalling(if you drive and then let her sit for over an hour it starts all over again). The check engine light is on and spits out codes P0301, P0302 and P0303. I did look these up and it says they are misfire codes. I do realize it might need new rings b/c the compression from left to right is 135, 150, 105 ,125. I am just not sure if the compression is the cause of the stalling. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Re: Need Help (idle problem)

hahaha i was gonna flip a shiit over another one of these threads, til i saw you have much bigger problem on your hands.

that compression isn't good, AT ALL!!!!!
even tho compression varies by altitude, the LOWEST you should be seeing is around 170'ish, and your highest isn't even that high. plus your compression numbers shouldn't vary by ~10%, and yours is 50% haha.

looks like you have MUCH bigger problems than a bouncing idle! since you've already done a comp test, i'd do a leakdown test just to confirm if your rings are worn, cuz they might be fine and it could possibly be an easier fix like your headgasket (unlikely, but possible), or maybe your valve seals.

Re: Need Help (idle problem)

Yeah i kinda figured it was a bigger problem then some of the things listed in the idle thread. So the question i have, is there a walkthrough on this site for a leakdown test? i am not to gifted when it comes to this stuff. So any directions i can get my hands on will be greatly appreciated. And also thank you very much for taking the time to read my entire post. Also when you say Valve seals, this isn't as invasive as a head gasket or ring repair is it? Any guides that anyone can link to for any three of these things that where mentioned above is a big help.

Re: Need Help (idle problem)

How to do Cylinder Leak Down Testing- Car Craft Magazine

its very similar to a compression test, except you shove/compress air into 1 cylinder at a time using an air compressor, then you go around listening thru the intake/exhaust to hear either your intake/exhaust valves leaking, looking in the rad for bubbles for a HG, or air out the oil filler cap for your rings.

i would say HG would be easiest. just pull the head off, replace the HG, and don't hafta touch anything in the block or head.
then valves would be next hardest, since you only gotta pull the head and take it apart.
then hardest would be rings, since you gotta yoink the entire engine (if you wanna do it the correct way)

Re: Need Help (idle problem)

i have 00 Lude, which has same exact symptoms and same exact misfire codes, cant figure out what exactly has gone wrong before this incident car wasn't running great either it seem to run wit low power and running rich on gas. i did the timing today hoping it was off and it was so i re aligned the Cam gears and all the pulleys to best of my knowledge but it seems to be going no where. can any 1 point me to a direction where i can obtain the timing marks for the timing belt and the balance shaft? also any input and advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Need Help (idle problem)

Im having a similar issue. I bought a 00 of a guy with the crank bolt snapped of in the crank when I replaced it and the pulley I had to realign the keyways. so I got cyl 1 to top dead center and got the marks on the cam gears to face upward and the keyways lined up. Now the car seems to run fine except at idle it starts misfiring. random multiple misfire 301,302,3030, 1399 misfire in any cylinder. anybody have any ideas......
