what is this knocking noise? w/ video

been told it could be a rod bearing.. just getting some more opinions..any feedback would be great.. thanks! the view is the bottom of the block.

this noise was first heard at about 65 mph follwed by some smoking under the hood.. popped open the hood and the oil cap was removed with smoke coming from inside.. put more oil in it the next day and ran perfectly fine but the noise still remained!

the start-up gives a loud ticking sound for about a second then sounds like so onthe video.

is it ok to still drive around with the remaining noise as long as you drive slowly and carefully?

the picture will send you to a video on my photobucket..

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. That's the classic spun rod bearing, I know that sound all too well. It will still drive for a short while, maybe 40 -50 miles then it will get louder and more violent sounding until the engine is locked up and becomes an inconvent paper weight in your engine bay. You have 2 options, 1 don't run the engine anymore, tear the engine apart, and put new bearings and resurface the crank and that will be it if your lucky and haven't caused too much damage from continueing to drive it after spinning it. Opition 2 go ahead and drive it till it locks up then just replace the engine all together.

Not good. basically what Scotty said, the more you drive it, the worse it's gonna get. Happened to my friend's 86 mr2.

Re: what is this knocking noise? w/ video

could still be the water pump...but i doubt it
i dunno tho after taking apart blaze_ydh's old h23 and seeing the crank in 2 totally different pieces, i no longer wanted to play with h motors
a cast aluminum block should shatter before that happens.
either way its time for an overhaul but its no big deal tho ive done a few for a few friends, all h22 tho and heres how it went
pistons cast oe, spec
$120 with wrist pins-rings
$65 clivite rod/crank bearings
$55 head gasket
$35 im/vc gasket
$60 timing belt/water pump
$30 oil/coolant/filter
-------
$365 and i charged $250 to do each engine
theres 3 h22s runing around Albuquerque ive rebuilt just like this
one opted for an oil pump, an additional $90

Re: what is this knocking noise? w/ video

goddamnit.. i just bought this new jdm h22 a lil bit ago n caught it smoking the other day n heard the loud noise.. sum hater must've undid my oil cap wen i got home bcuz the lude doesn't have a front grille n i made it back from reno nevada to sacramento california without any problems. i was shocked to see what happend.. one more question.. i have another h22 block but the head gasket was blown n some water got in the cylinders.. wuld this affect the rod bearings in the old block? the old block doesn't sound like this so i'm thinking it would be fine. we can take it apart n replace em.. but its a usdm. is this project possible?

Re: what is this knocking noise? w/ video

to make sure it is the rod bearings start the car and pull the spark plug wires off one at a time and when the knocking stops that is your problem bearing.

Re: what is this knocking noise? w/ video

if you really wanna know if its your rod bearings, drain your oil, drop the oil pan and take an old rag or tshirt and strain whatever oil is left in the pan and if you find chunks of copper its your bearings. you can actually replace the rod bearings while the motor is still in the car, you'll just have to do almost everything from the bottom.
