Icon5 New exhaust causing back backfiring?

Hello, this is my first post here. I looked at some of the other post and couldnt find any info on what Im looking for. So I have a 2001 Prelude. I just did the entire exhaust system. The header down pipe and catback are all new. When I put the system on I decided to gut my catalytic converter. I just drilled everything out of it. I have a check engine light on now but I know it is from the catalytic converter. But now when Im driving and really tearing into it she backfires sometimes. Any info on how to make it stop and clearing the check engine light would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Re: New exhaust causing back backfiring?

you can't turn the CEL off, you can try taking a non fowler and put in the cat then put the o2 sensor in that but i doubt it will fix it. and as far as backfiring is concerned. what did you think was going to happen when you straight pipe your car? deal with it or get another cat.

Re: New exhaust causing back backfiring?

Got any exhaust leaks? That can cause a backfire.

Re: New exhaust causing back backfiring?

Haha, mine too. That extra fuel has to be burned up somehow

But seriously, that's what is going to happen with a gutted cat.

Re: New exhaust causing back backfiring?

i have no cat and i used 2 18mm antifoulers one drilled out to 1/2 ( so the sencondary o2 fits ) and then one more threaded into the cat delete pipe . no cel i have done this on many of my hondas . my 06 s2k had this set up behind the cat pipe for 2 years only one time did it ever come on . cleared it and never saw it again

Re: New exhaust causing back backfiring?

Just replace the cat with a test pipe. A good one is only like $30-50 bucks.

Re: New exhaust causing back backfiring?

the airflow in the gutted cat is prob causing the popping sound, my friends does it all the time, its nothing to worry about. for the cel go to autozone and find the spark plug non fouler that our o2 will thread into. its like 3 bucks. drill it out a little and use it as a spacer for the secondary

I have gutted my CAT and have no problems, in fact the gutting has been great. Muffler is a little louder across the band and the engine revs much smoother/faster. CAT was still fine (not clogged) but it definitely is a point of restriction!

To the OP, what are you using for tuning? You will be running lean and run the risk of burning valves etc if you have not changed fuel delivery. Stock ignition and fuel maps at WOT can only give so much at each rpm, changing the whole exhaust system will lean out your air fuel ratio, or so I found out! My recommendation, get it onto a dyno for an air fuel curve. Then tune, should sort out the miss fire.

As for the CEL, have you kept the primary and secondary oxygen sensors?
