00 Honda Prelude Burning Rich

Hey guys,
I drive a 2000 Honda Prelude that I bought used from a car dealership a couple months ago and it's been running a bit rich- I'm getting black smoke out of my exhaust (mainly when I shift). I've been running Premium 91 octane fuel ever since I bought the car (with exception for one fill up when I burned regular- never burn regular in a lude, it sucked), like the owners manual suggests. The car has 145000 kms on it; that's approximately 90 000 miles for all of you Americans. I've already replaced the spark plugs with NGK iridiums in hopes that my plugs were simply no longer up to par but the problem persists. Is this a typical thing to happen to Preludes when burning 91 Octane? Should I simply start burning Plus (89 Octane) instead and see if there are any changes (dealership suggested trying this first)? Or are there typical firing problems that 5th gen Preludes have that can be corrected?
Thanks
PS It doesn't seem to be affecting my fuel mileage in any significant way when I reference what it's MPG should be.

Re: 00 Honda Prelude Burning Rich

They all run a bit rich, it's the factory ecu setting (esp on the high cam). Whatever the manual mentions is the minimum fuel grade you can go. (Not sure what the minimum MON octane is - it's 95RON if that means anything to you)

as mentioned above its common to run rich on the high cam or vtec!

stick with whats listed as far a fuel goes. we in the states have to use premium which starts at 91 but i found my car runs best on 93!

do you see the smoke at all rpm when shifting or just when in vtec!

Ok thanks! I mostly seem to get the smoke when shifting.
