97 auto tranny slipping

Hey guys. I am about to buy a 97 prelude auto with h22a engine. It just got a tranny rebuild maybe 2 weeks ago with one year warranty at some ghetto shop. Now when I test drove it, first couple round a bouts were OK. Then when I decided to floor it, the rpm kicked up to 6-7k but the car would not accelerate. It took almost 3 seconds from 30 MPH to get to 40mph. After researching this I think its the transmission slipping. But the tranny Just got a rebuild.. should that be happening? Do you guys think it can be rebuilt again through warranty or should I just not buy the car? Thanks for your time. Help is very appreciated.

Re: 97 auto tranny slipping

The 5th gen auto trannies are garbage. It's quite possible that the tranny is still f***ed up. If you buy the car, do yourself a favor and convert to a manual. Not to be a bandwagoner or anything... it's just a fact of 5th gen life.

Re: 97 auto tranny slipping

well, it is an slushbox. so its not going to accelerate right away anyway, you always have that lag. not to mention 60+ less HP than a manual car of the same gen

Re: 97 auto tranny slipping

The autos fitted to these cars are inherantly crap. (At some point in the past there was actually a massive lawsuit against Honda/Acura for the constant failures)

You could always question the work the shop has done, (or if indeed they actually did the work, or if they just flushed the fluid and thought that'll do!) but it's been noted many times that a recently rebuilt trans has failed again.

If you haven't yet bought the car, I'd steer clear and look for a manual. If you simply must have an auto, I'd look for a celica.

Re: 97 auto tranny slipping

i disagree^

yes generally speaking the automatic trannies do suck. there ARE good ones. mine for example still works perfectly **knock on wood** mine downshifts almost immediatly upon pushing the gas pedal to the floor. and starts accelerating immediatly after. i've kept right along side 5spd ludes from rolls. my auto tranny is no slushbox.

however, i'd say the one you're looking at IS. try and get the price dropped. use that money saved to purchase a 5spd tranny and swap it over. do not rebuild. i've heard of a few folks getting their trannies rebuilt and almost immediatly after the warranty it breaks again.

Re: 97 auto tranny slipping

Mine's still going strong too Drew **also knocks on wood** but it appears we're the only ones. Regular fluid changes can keep them alive longer, but I'm kinda of the opinion these days it's a foregone conclusion. Not so much if it will fail, but when.

Re: 97 auto tranny slipping

Dude....I orig had a auto tranny in my 97 as well!!! Wha you jus described in your first post is EXACTLY what happened to mine!!!

Sorry for the long post...I jus kno how you feel and what you're going through that's all.

When I swapped out the USDM for a JDM which you have there is a huge diff. But you notice the diff when you go from AUTO-->5SPD!!!

When we stripped off the auto tranny. The drain bolt to the tranny...well in the link under my sig you'll see 1 pic where my friend is holding the bolt and on it is the sludge of the BLACK tranny fluids as well as massive amounts of metal shavings all around the magnetic bolt!!! Not only that...the crank shaft normally has a U-shaped indent which is the key to rotate the motor. Let's jus say it went from the orig of a U-shape to a "check mark". One side of it was good but the other side of that U was so worn out that it looked slanted. Pretty much in a form of a check mark if you get my point.

Then the crank pulley itself...OMFG!!!

Normally the inner circle has teeth marks to grab grip right?!?! Let's jus say that the crank shaft wasnt fully all the way through the crank pulley bc half of the teeth closest to the motor was soooo stripped it was flat and I mean fukkin FLAT!!! The other half away from the motor was still perfect bc the crank shaft never really made contact to that other side!!!

I too was gassing it semi hard and it would rev to about near 5-6RPM and it then would pull slowly to get the momentum going and once that happened when I would brake...as I came to a near full stop i would feel a clunking or hard jerk.

IMO...slowly save up and get it converted to 5spd if and when possible!!! You'll be happy you spent ur hard earned money on that swap once it's done. If you're residing in NY then you're in luck!!! Bustr Built is all I gotta say!!!
