VTEC issue, selenoid ok, oil pressure?

Ok, so while I wait for my new clutch and flywheel to get here to replace the rear main seal that is seeping/leaking, i decided to check out why it is that when I hit vtec at about 5400 its fine but when it gets past 6000 rpm, its like hitting a louder rev limiter or fuel cut out, makes an awful noise. I didn't stay on the throttle when it did this to see if it would work its way through in fear of making it worse, and it wasn't just once, and the car was warmed up very well. I went through the trouble shooting in the manual, continuity shows about 15.8 ohms which is in spec, solenoid screen was clean, but cleaned it anyway, and checked the solenoid movement, its nice and free with good movement. So i put it back on.

I am about to go test continuity at the oil pressure switch, but i don't have an oil pressure gauge to test the pressure yet... if anything I'd like to add a oil psi gauge in a pod inside the car or somewhere (shame on honda for not having one). Does anyone know of any other things I should check, and can a leaky rear main seal cause low oil pressure enough for vtec not to work properly? Thanks in advance

Re: VTEC issue, selenoid ok, oil pressure?

if you were low on oil, vtec wouldn't engage at all, so that doesn't sound like the problem.
and if vtec is engaging, then there's most likely nothing wrong with the vtec system, so something else is causing the fuel-cut/low redline. were there any CEL's?

Re: VTEC issue, selenoid ok, oil pressure?

I just changed the oil and filter 3 days ago, and am checking the oil level every day since it is leaking. No CEL's. Oil pressure switch has the correct continuity also.

I also discovered that my oil drain plug on what looks like a newer oil pan is the wrong size/over sized. It looked like a reg bolt cut down to size when i changed it, so i went and got the right one at auto parts store, and it is a standard thread size over sized than the OEM metric plug... F'ing great.

Well i looking at $200 for an oil pan off ebay, anyone know of any after market oil pans for a better price? The size on this plug/pan now is WAY to big to even put an oversize plug on it... it's a good thing I got a great deal on this lude cause its gettin a bit ridiculous.

check out the FS/part outs section for someone who blew up an H22. i'd never pay more than $15 for an oil pan.

Re: VTEC issue, selenoid ok, oil pressure?

Ya, thats WAY too much after just spending $300 on a clutch/flywheel for me... $15 sounds good, checked out parts FS and posted a WTB too...

Any other ideas on the VTEC issue or should i wait to worry about it after I get the main seal, etc. worked out?

Re: VTEC issue, selenoid ok, oil pressure?

... I'm guessing that the RM seal or even an oil pan gasket leak would have anything to do with affecting the way vtec acts, as long as the oil level is staying where it should... I know i need to test for oil pressure when i get a gauge. Any other advise? whats the best way to add an oil psi gauge?

Re: VTEC issue, selenoid ok, oil pressure?

Probably the easiest way to add is a oil sandwich plate. Fits between oil filter and motor and has place to thread in line for gauge.

If you are going to just use gauge to check pressure I would go with mechanical gauge as it is lil cheaper and temporary mount on wiper. (flame away, but it allow to check pressure while driving and saves money for test)

If going leave on car get electronic oil pressure sender as won't have to run lines with oil into cabin, just wires to gauge.
