Clutch problem?

So driving on the free way i pushed the clutch in, put it in neutral to slow down...tried to put it back in gear and it wouldnt go for about 10 seconds of trying over and over while I slowed down to 40 on the interstate in the middle lane. Got it in gear and had no problem the rest of the night, woke up this morning put it in reverse backed up and tried to put it in first and it wouldnt go, pushed it back in the driveway and then it would go in to gear. I've never had any slipping really. The only thing I've noticed is when I'm on the freeway for an hour or so and i go into the city the car sorta acts goofy accelerating, kinda bogs down easier. What do you guys think? Much help would be appreciated. It goes into gear fine when the car is off. Im a big time newbie with cars so if you could explain as simple as possible what it might be it would help. I'm also pretty positive the clutch has never been done, it is at 117k miles.

Re: Clutch problem?

It's possible that a spring on your cltch has popped out or is very loose and about to pop out and/or your clutch is just dying. Also, have you checked your fluid level in the clutch resivor?

Re: Clutch problem?

I checked the fluid and it was good, i dont plan on fixing this myself, i just wanna make sure I dont overpay at a shop. If it is infact a clutch I do have a friend that can help me do the clutch job. Im just hoping my trans hasent pooped...not really in a position to pay a shop 2 grand.

Re: Clutch problem?

Alright so I took it to an autoshop they were pretty sure it was the clutch. They said they'd do the clutch and resurface the flywheel for 855 out the door. Called another shop and am waiting to hear back from them. The only thing is my friend has done multiple engine jobs on his jeep and is pretty good with cars and said we could get the parts for 270 or so and probably bust it out in 5 hours or so. What do you guys think? My only concerns are that I have no one to fall back on if something goes wrong while we do it. SO i guess what I am asking is if you guys think it is too much of a risk to do it with my friend or bust out 855 dollars? He said he'd help me do it for free so I'd just buy the parts and he has replaced his jeeps engine like 3 or 4 times and done timing belts etc on multiple cars. Lemme know what you think, thanks guys.

The next shop said 688...

Re: Clutch problem?

just do it yourself. It's really not that hard to change a clutch, it's just time consuming and a matter of maneuvering the tranny so it slides back into place. Sometimes they slide on easily, sometimes they can be a bitch. If your friend has changed motors in a Jeep, this should be a breeze for him
