Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

Ok, so I just bought my 2001 prelude, have some pretty good mechanical background, but guy told me there was a leak from the oil-cooler o-ring, Honda said it's an hour labor and like $6 for the part, so figured i'd do it myself, thing is i dunno where its at, i know the oil is coming from the back of motor up top, but can't see exactly where. Anyone have a chiltons or helms manual on PDF? Would appreciate any help, or anyone who just wants to be a smart ass that still lives with mom, i am expecting it.

Re: Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

Ok, well before I got any response i found it, got the old o-ring out, it actually doesn't look that bad, I hope that is it, there was oil from there down on the motor and on some connectors and stuff. I also would like to check out/replace the v-tec solenoid gasket. Where is this located, also trying to find the link for a 5th gen manual under FAQ's. Help please...

Re: Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

The O-ring is around where the oil filter is hence why you're leaking bc the oil that cycles around and through the filter is now pouring pass the O-ring n leaking to the floor.

Re: Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

Ya I am hoping that is it, I don't know of anything back there that would put out that much oil and that amount of area, I know if it was the rear main it would just be leaking out of the bottom of joint where the tranny and motor come together. I will save that for when I put in a new clutch.

Re: Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

Ok, so i got the new o-ring today from honda, $8.11 after tax... now this f**ker seems like its too big to fit in the groove, its identical to the old one, but just seems like it all doesn't want to fit all the way in!! Im gettin pissed

Re: Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

Yeah getting it to stay in the groove while you put it together is a major pain. Try putting a dab of Hondabond on a few spots and see if it'll stay put long enough

Re: Newb question, oil cooler o-ring...

Well I used 4 spots of honda bond, got it to stay while i put it against the block, and it didn't feel pinched, so i tightened it down, put a new filter on and oil in it, and took it around the block, don't see any oil... maybe the old guy i bought it from was right, i'll keep checkin it everyday just to make sure. Thanks for all the help and pointers guys.

One thing I don't understand about that whole setup is that that one shaft holds the oil cooler, and oil filter on, so if you (or someone else) were to over tighten the oil filter you could possibly loosen the oil cooler as well and mess up that seal... i would of thought honda would have seen that... im used to working on their motorcycles, and i don't think my CBR is like that.
