Prelude dies when its hot

I have a manual 98 prelude base. So every time its hot outside my car will die. It'll be driving normal and then like someone flipped a switch the motor will shut off, but the radio and electronics are still on and still work. After like 30 seconds to a minute it'll start right back up. Sometimes it'll happen when I first start the car too. It'll turn on for barely a second and then die. I've replaced the ignition control module and that hasn't fixed it. Please help.

okay you said you replace ignition control module ,do you have a cell light on ?are your o2 sensors old ,and how many miles on lude ? also it could be your fuel regulator ,or fuel pump going bad ,a bad fuel filter ,need more information .

Just about to say that. Next time your car shuts down on you, turn the key fully off then turn it to the on position and listen for a click underneath your dash. If you hear nothing your main relay could be going bad. I think ive read about them doing wierd things when they get hot.

it could be the main relay. the pins tend to gap when it gets hot. but with mine it never just turned off. i just couldnt get it started.

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

A wierd thing I just learned this past weekend..if the fuel pump gets too hot it can stop sending fuel. I was riding around in my friends new car and his fuel pump was positioned too close to the exhaust, so it was getting real hot. Luckily, we had an ice chest of alcohol in the back seat so he used some ice to cool down the fuel pump (on 4 or 5 occasions) and then it would start again.

yep thats true! But our fuel pumps are located in the gas tank and the gas cools the fuel pump. Now your fuel pump can overheat if your out of gas and you keep trying to start it, (happened to me) but i dont think the ambient heat would shut the fuel pump off. But anythings possible!

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

Do you have an update on your car. I have the exact same problem and here in California it gets friggen hot low 100's - 110. My car has no chance during the day and sometimes at night. I replaced the distributor and coil cause the machanic said that was the issue. However, it was still dying after we put in the parts. I have not tried the main relay but will suggest it. the car is in the shop t now.

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

I have a brand new main relay, distributor and coil. The Fuel pump and filter are good. The mechanic said it might be the Crankshaft Position sensor... Have you ever heard of the Crank sensor killing a car before? I know it can make it run bad and all. If you have any ideas or experience let me know. thanks

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

i know on my moms trailblazer the crankshaft sensor was the problem. however the crankshaft sensor works with the cam sensor so if one of those are not reading right then it will cause the car to shut down. so check those two sensors

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

a cranks sensor will make a car shut off when it gets hot ( the engine not the air temp ) but that usually leaves a code as a tell tale . i just had to replace the ignition switch on my roomates integra for this exact problem . dose the key have play in it if you push the key all the way to start position and just let it go and flip back on its own dose it stall ??

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

I need help guys - asap - I have two issues, my 98 honda Prelude SH, drives fine... as soon as its warmed up - I will come to a complete stop, or just press the gas when its on neutral it will stall, and also does this when im turning sharp turns, i.e like in a parking spot. and the idle is always below 1k. the oil light and other lights come up when its just about to turn off, but some time it does turn off it idles back up a bit. second.... plate light when out, i put a new one, not good with wires but I have a red and blk, I know blk is ground, red is positive how do i get this license plate light to work? sorry for my stupidness... thanks pls help ASAP. cant afford to get pulled over or be stranded in the middle of no where...

Re: Prelude dies when its hot

for all the guys having the stalling issues, bring a spark plug around with you, when it stalls, jump out and see if you are still getting a spark. there are many parts and wires that if cracked the heat will open the gap a hair further and stop the current till they cool and contract. igniter as mentioned has been as issue for me in both a teg and an eg but also in your cap heat can have the same effect. lots of things to try. take the hood off, see what happens. best of luck
