Smoking...

Hey, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but it seems to fit.

Well.. I just got a 5th gen prelude, and i love it.. But the guy before me put some mods on it and whatnot.. But my problem is, is that the exhaust is smoking.. Bad.. It's a whitish kinda smoke.. The guy has one of those Maxwell House coffee can exhausts on it.. I mean GReddy. :) hahaha. Uhh. I don't exactly have the money to drop on a new exhaust system.. I was just wondering if anybody had any ideas... I'm about to go check the oil (Even though the seller says he just serviced a month before... Right.).. But any ideas, would be great.. Appreciate the help guys..

Re: Smoking...

sounds like a bad headgasket to me, not the exhaust, coolant burns white so you get white smoke. ive never heard of an exhaust smoking white before. check your coolant level and check your oil if it is a bad head gasket it might be milky. also if you get a chance do leak down test

Re: Smoking...

Ye, just to chime with the guys , it 's a head gasket , check your radiator is probably milky inside oil is mixing with coolant , also check the oil cap look for signs of the milky stuff, and check your oil stick .

Re: Smoking...

if its burning coolant it may be a head gasket

Re: Smoking...

My 1997 did the same thing. Pulled a spark plug and it was covered in coolant. It was the head gasket as everyone has said.

Re: Smoking...

Head gasket? Ehdamn. Haha. I checked the oil and it was a quart low.. So i don't know if it was just low when i bought it or if it loss that much.. Regardless, somethings not right.. How much did it cost to get your head gasket replaced?

Oh and this might be part of the problem, dunno, but i've noticed when i idle, if i turn the A/C on i hear a squeaking sound.. Bleh, the joy of used cars. Hahah, thanks for the help guys.

Re: Smoking...

a quart low in a month do u vtec often? i burn thru half a quart every two weeks but my car is usually screaming thru most of my driving!

our motor burn oil is something vtec naturally does you should check oil levels every time you get gas or every othe weekend!

also white smoke is never good if coolant isn't mixing yet it will be!

Burning oil is definitely common on our engines. I burn about half a quart between oil changes.
Might want to pull a spark plug out and see if there's anything on it. If it is a head gasket (which I think everyone is agreeing on that it probably is), get it looked at as soon as you can, that'll lead to some serious problems bro.
And the squeak, probably just a belt. If ya' just bought the car, probably not a bad idea to drop $50 at a shop and get them to do a full inspection for you.

Re: Smoking...

Ight, that's what i was thinking about doing actually..I've quit driving it.. But I might try and drive it to the shop to get it fixed, because I really don't wanna drop a $100 to get it towed...

And @my92lude, I've only hit VTEC in it once. I was like doing 60+ and was like ohshi- this is nice... haha. Then I remembered i was in a 45 and didn't have tags yet. Hahah

Re: Smoking...

i would agree with everyone, sounds like the head gasket is going bad. is it over heating yet? if so, dont let it get too hot or youll end up having more than a head gasket problem. (warped head)
