97 Prelude AT - Help needed

Hey like most Automatic Preludes mines been having some issues.

im at 150k now

The gear wont go from park into the next gear reverse. It will go from reverse onwards. I have to press the button on the right of the gears to change it from Park to reverse. Anyone know what this issue is?
BTW this happened after I tested the car following transmission fluid change.
I put in 3quarts of fluid.

The car also doesnt shift smoothly always from 1st to 2nd but all the other gears shift smooth.

Any help?

P.S I would like to sell this and get a manual but would need to fix these issues before I do that.

Re: 97 Prelude AT - Help needed

Solved the not going into gear problem for anyone else that has the issue. I took apart the center console tightned some of the wiring and it was good to go.

Car still revs high attimes then softly jerks into second, Im guessing that is a tranny issue

you only put in 3 quarts? you do realize that when your changing it, it takes 6.8, and if you replace the filter as well, it takes 7.2

Your pressure plates are probably worn out...

Mine does the same thing and I think thats just the way they are. Notice that if you drive it like ya stole it, it shifts much better than it does just toolin around at low speeds ? ...Thats the way they are.

Are you talking about the transmission fluid?

How would you check if its the pressure plates?

Yeah if you take off it tends to shift smooth. This is definitely a transmission issue?

Re: 97 Prelude AT - Help needed

Mine started out that way after I rear ended a guy at 30mph, oops. Then it slowly started getting worse between 1st and 2nd. Then it started between 3rd and 4th. Then the next thing I know after replacing 500 bucks worth of sensors, it did the same thing. Eventually it got to where it would slip between all gears, then once it got hot, it would slam into 2nd gear, even if you were doing 90. You better HANG ON when that happens. Now I am fixin to replace it with a tranny I bought yesterday off of a guy.

Just my two cents

Re: 97 Prelude AT - Help needed

Thanks. Yeah, this AT tranny is not gonna last forever but it has been getting alot better after the fluid change. All the other gears shift smooth. Im just gonna save up money for a 5spd or swap to 5spd.

Re: 97 Prelude AT - Help needed

yes, 20k slipping between gears, until it just got hung in second gear. It was fun while it lasted because eventually it slipped so bad between first and second, that if you timed it just right and punched the throttle, you could do a good second gear burn off and turn a lot of heads. Not good on the drive lines, but thats why they are getting replaced with the new tranny

Re: 97 Prelude AT - Help needed

i bought my prelude from a buddy, drove it to work for the first time and i broke down. tranny went out. did the 5 speed conversion. sooooo muuuuuch beetttterrrr !!!! everything was so much easier than i thought it would be. only challenge was drilling the holes for the master cylinder in the right place so that the clutch pedal would be perfectly straight. other than that it was pretty simple

Re: 97 Prelude AT - Help needed

Dang it!!! Everybody and your 5spd swaps. You are soooo lucky. I can't keep up with the site enough to get all the necessary parts or even find a salvage yard within driving distance to get the other parts. I envy you all.....
