Lude dies while driving problem

Hey..My 98 Prelude which used to be automatic but changed to the h22a manual dies while driving. It does not die in the early morning or after the sun goes down. BUT during the day..it will turn off while driving. the power doesn't turn off cause the radio still plays but the engine just dies and leaves me coasting down the freeway. It will usually start back up after pushing down the clutch and turning the ignition off then back on..My mechanic thought it was a sensor or some little square chip looking thing inside inside the distributor and the main relay. He replaced them and the car was fine then it started to die again. He got an after market chip for the distributor but it still dies. any ideas I can take to the mechanic?

Did you switch to a manual ECU when putting the tranny in?

Re: Lude dies while driving problem

Ask your mechanic to check for any codes pending , it could be fuel related or ecu like tone capone said , it could be a combination of electrical and fuel ,some times even if there's no codes ,the failing part will work but not to it's full potential ,example knock sensor is known for causing some problem with bogging down not to say this your problem.Keep updating .

Re: Lude dies while driving problem

You might want to check the Honda recalls. I had a 97 CRV (before my Prelude) and the ecu would just die on it while we were riding down the road (some sort of burnt circuit malfunction). I don't know if it affected the automatic preludes though....thats why I got a manual!!!

Re: Lude dies while driving problem

the mechanic thought it was the distributor he ran tests on it and blew a hair dryer on it while the engine was running and it shut off. so he put in a brand new distributor and coil and thought it would be fine. That was not the issue. The car still died as I drove it and here in California where it gets in the high 90's and low 100's during the day the car is nearly impossible to drive. It dies and dies. I took it in today and he will check the ecu. I am not sure if the ecu was changed from automatic to manual, however, I got the car two years ago and never had this problem until summer came around. any ideas??

Re: Lude dies while driving problem

UPDATE-- My mechanic thinks it is now a Crankshaft Position Sensor issue. He said he is about to close and will be closed tomorrow. I work all week so I can not take it in until next Saturday... in the meantime in theory can the Crankshaft Position Sensor stall the car while driving. The mechanic thinks so, but I have searched around and could not find stalling or dying as a problem releated to the sensor.
