h22a with a triptronic tranny

so i have a h22a witha triptronic tranny and im having a weird shift problem into second. but my boys keep telling me i need a different ecu with that motor and that also my shift solonoids might be going out. but im under the impression all i need to do is replace the torque converter.

Re: h22a with a triptronic tranny

you need a 5 spd. not a tiptranny, autos suck.. personally it sounds like the transmisson its self. but its been wayy to damn long since i had my 5th gen back in 06-07.

Re: h22a with a triptronic tranny

It's not the torque converter, more likely the trans is dieing. I drove one that was almost dead a few years ago and that's what it did - flared up on the 1-2 shift.

I'm not sure what the cause is. It's not the ecu, as the ecu doesn't talk to the trans. It may be the solenoids, but as far as I have been able to find, nobody has ever pulled apart a dead Prelude auto to find out - they just swap in a 5-spd. Which tbh is probably a better option as the 5-spd doesn't have the retarded moonshine gear ratios that the auto does. I've been driving my auto for a few years now, and every tiem I drive one of these with a 4-spd I wish I'd been able to find one as they're a totally different car.

Re: h22a with a triptronic tranny

It really depends on whats happening....If it waits, and then abruptly shifts into second...and it does this consistently....Your transmission could be going out...which, yes, is a great time to switch to a 5spd(thats what Im waiting on)

Re: h22a with a triptronic tranny

why repair an auto trans??, all this means is your car is ready for a 5spd swap.

Cause sometimes it makes more sense sometimes to keep it auto. If his problem isn't the whole transmission failing, it would make no sense to spend the money and do a full swap just I know it sounds dumb, but big cities, like Atlanta where I live, it almost doesn't make sense to have a stick as a daily driver. 2-3 hour traffic jams? That'd be a nice workout. My lude will eventually be a 5spd, but Im waiting until the current tranny gives out on me...then I will do the switch. By that time, I hope I will be out of atlanta.

Re: h22a with a triptronic tranny

i also have a 97 with triptronic and im also having transmission problems... exceeptt mine is the reverse when out.. like all other gears work fine but if u put it in reverse or even pass reverse too slow the gears grind looud.. i was told i need a whole new tranny but like WESTERNPRELUDE said makes no sense to have a 5 speed in atlanta.. crazt traffic... and i cant find the tranny i need ANYWHERE in atlanta so the only other option is to have it rebuilt :(
