How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

Can someone teach me how to change the speakers and tweeters, is it an easy task that a beginner can achieve?
I'm just trying to change my front door speakers and tweeters.

Are there any D.I.Y tutorials on this on the forum, I couldn't find it.
Its time to replace my crappy JVC speakers with some Pioneers.

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

A beginner should be able to do it. Only thing is that you may need to cut the basket away from the door panel to get the speakers to fit. No big deal though...

I was gonna say the same thing. Most aftermarket speakers are too deep to fit without cutting out the plastic bezel behind the speaker, but it is very easy to do.

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

But my front speakers are already aftermarket, so would it just be a plug and play for me in this position? Are there any wirings involved?

Do I just basically take out the old speakers, put the new ones in place and plug in the original wire into the new speakers?

If your fronts are aftermarket then it should be mostly plug n play for you.

I tell ya what, attempt to change em out. IF you run into any issues, take pics and let us know whats up. I promise we can probably trouble-shoot you through a speaker install in less than a half hour.

Small bit of advice: sometimes with small projects like this it is more beneficial for you to get in there and attempt to figure it out on your own. If you can't get it that's cool, hit us up and we'll help ya out. But you'd be amazed at how much you can infer from a situation if you just dive in. Plus it isn't like you couldn't live without front speakers for a day while you figure it out. Anyways, good luck and let us know how it goes!

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

I spent about 4 days (a few hours a day) replacing my front speakers/tweeters AND running new speaker wire. I got a pair of Polk DB6501 components that are listed as 6.5in speakers, but I had to do some major dremel fabrication of the door panels to get the speakers to mount correctly.

What about them does not fit? Almost all speakers are going to require you to at the very least cut the basket out of the door panel. However it is possible that the magnet is too big and is reaching the door skin. Let us know what your issue is specifically and we'll get ya sorted out.

The mount depth for those speakers is 2 1/4" which won't hit the door, but the baskets do need cut out. The problem with mine was the diameter of the speaker and the actual speaker mounting holes. I had to dremel 4 places in the door panel for the speaker/speaker screws to drop in to.

4 days??? Wow! It took me only about 45 min to change both ft door speakers and tweeters with some 6.5" pioneers, only had to cut out the rear plastic baskets and drill new holes to mount them and thats it. It was mad easy and now they sound great. Don't understand what you had so much trouble with?

Its because the rims of the speakers weren't a circle. The 4 screw holes jutted out from the rim... so I had to dremel the hell out of the panels. And those 4 days included running new speaker wire through the rubber grommets in the doors... which was a complete pain in the ass haha.

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

I opted for a shop to install mine, since I accidentally missed up the wirings, and it was only $25 a speaker, so it was $50 flat for both front speakers, the guy who did mine also cut the baskets out to properly mount the 6.5 pioneers I had.

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

I did this EXACT thing with a pair of infinitys. Yes, I had to cut the basket away like everyone is saying. I also drilled my own holes.... As for the wiring goes...

I just broke the stock harnesses in half and pulled out the wires separately, which already had connectors on them. Then I put them right on the tabs of the speakers, tested them, and put them back in. The screw tabs on the speakers stuck out too far so i just cut them off, so they are like a half-open circle (and the speakers were 4-hole instead of the stock 3-hole), so I had to drill new holes, using self-tappers. Now they sound great, and still fit under the covers!

I should have done a DIY on this!

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

Our speakers are listed as 6.5 but are really 6.25

If u measure the oem door speakers straight across it's 6.25 and with the bend it's 6.5

Sooooo... So of u are having problems because u probably got "true" 6.5 speakers instead of just regular 6.5's

Re: How to change speakers and tweeters on 5th gen.

sry 4 bringing up a dated thread.. just wanted to throw an option on installing aftermarket 6.5 in doors instead of dremeling and hacking up a door cause the new speakers dont fit the speaker basket. if u hav the factory speaker basket just trace the shape on MDF (type of particale board) slightly bigger. new speakers usually comes with grills. trace the inside hole of new grill in the center of traced outline of the factory speaker basket (the hole should b excact size for new speaker to drop in so no need to guess.). using a jigsaw cut speaker hole and test fit speaker. if speaker is alittle oversized n the outside rim of speaker run outside traced basket line then cut the outline of oem basket alittle bigger. now test fit custom spacer on door n use factory screw points or make new ones on door with sharp stinger screws. remember to predrill holes on custom spacer for mounting to door. place door panel back on to check for clearence. primer the custom spacers u just made in black. speaker will fit flat on spacer n use wood screws for a solid mount. use duct tape or better alittle dynomat to seal little gaps between spacer n door.
just my 2 cents

Yes I haven't seen an aftermarket speaker to fit inside that pod yet. I wonder if you can cut and extend it out and put like PVC between the two pieces,,, cause a sealed enclosure would be better right?

Probably already been done before....
