Auto Tranny finally starting to take its toll.

Hey my fellow luders, today I just found out the bottom of my transmission has a crack and its leaking tranny fluid. FYI - I have a 5th gen, AUTO. So when I first saw a puddle of fluid on the floor my first reaction was motor oil, because i just had an oil change a couple days ago and maybe the guys over at the shop didnt screw the filter right. So I didn't have much worrys until they lifted my car, and all I could see is the transmission all soaking wet of tranny oil, then we found a crack on the bottom corner of it.

The guys over at the shop quoted me $1500 just for a used JDM auto tranny with 50k on it. Plus an extra $800 for labor, you gotta be killing me !

So I've told my uncle and he told me not to do it because its wayyy too expensive, so I towed it to his work place "smog center" and he told me his friend owns a auto shop and can replace my tranny for a used one for $1500.
So now I'm waiting till thursday to send my precious car over to his shop.

What a day! - Also the previous shop told me I should replace my lower control arms on the front pass side, and my engine mounts too, talk about debt! and no I will not opt out for a 5pd swap.

Re: Auto Tranny finally starting to take its toll.

hey i just had my prelude's auto trans fail on me. the cheapest tranny i found was around a grand. I got all the 5 speed stuff i mean everything i needed for around 700 and now its a five speed that i dont have to worry about. seriously was worth the work. i mean the only thing that was kinda challenging was drilling the firewall for the master cylinder. we took out my dash so create more room so we could work and reinforce the clutch pedal frame. there are alot of threads on this site that can help also. i mean if you dont know how or want to learn how to drive stick then good luck with the new trans. if i were going to stay with the automatic i wouldnt get a used one i would try to get a rebuilt one or ship one from japan with low mileage. at least you know it will last for a while you know what i mean? gl with your car

^^^ What he said.

And FYI, 5 spds last a long time, and a jdm one is about $600, and rather simple to replace.

Re: Auto Tranny finally starting to take its toll.

Guys, the trannies aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be. My buddy has an auto 5th gen with 150k km on it. It shows no signs of wear, shifts and drives smoothly etc. And he drives it pretty hard. Its how you drive it tbh. If you launch it, you're gonna hurt it, if you do stuff like going from 4th, downshifting to second with the tiptronic, you are gonna hurt it. Going from a roll and flooring it, isn't going to do nearly as much to wear it out. Don't let it seem like you are going to be replacing trannies every year. Also, we don't know how you drive. I'd assume, you have the auto because you aren't into spirited driving, you just like the lude because it looks nice. So I would assume that you aren't going to be rat bagging it. Therefore, if you want to get another auto, go for it.

However, if you do drive it "like a lude," I would highly recommend doing a 5 speed swap.

Re: Auto Tranny finally starting to take its toll.

Do a five speed swap man!!! why not? You don't know how to drive stick??? Its pretty easy to learn. What is there to think about?? Doing a swap is cheaper, more reliable, lighter, and more fun to drive! I am in the middle of doing it to my car right now. I already have the clutch pedal and master cylinder installed (did not have to remove dash to install) and I am still driving it around as an automatic. Just waiting for time when I can get around to doing the rest. Do it man!

dude...I drive an auto as well...and as much as it is easier to drive an auto...it is true that you will spend more money if you replace it with another auto. Which is why I am going to 1, learn how to drive a stick better, and 2, do the manual swap when it craps out on me. You should definitely do a 5 spd swap....and get complete control of the lude!

Yes...I actually am going to have to agree with this. Mine, knock on wood, has had no problems. One of the only times I had an issue with the thing was about a month ago when it kind of did the hang on to first and then slightly abrubtly shift into second...did it in both sequential shift and regular shift modes. But...It wasn't anything serious, as the poor girl had just woken up and I was being a liiiittle rough on her. And it has not happened since. So I am a testament that not all of the 5g lude auto trannys are compleeete crap.

yeah i took my dash out to make room so that i could weld some reinforcements for the clutch pedal housing, it looked like it would move just a bit when pushing the pedal down. probly made a difference that i got a stage 1 centerforce it is a lil harder to push the pedal with it. also, i read somewhere that these guys installed the pedal without reinforcing it and the actual pedal housing cracked. FYI. i dunno maybe i didnt have to take the dash out but thats some O.C.D. for you hahahaha

Re: Auto Tranny finally starting to take its toll.

I do love a 5 speed but i have sat in traffic for sometimes three hours and more in Atlanta and thank god i have an auto, i put a h22 auto with an h23 vtec and have had nothing but great things to say about it, and it has no probs.. just take good care of it and keep the gaskets nice and new and if you have to re-build it . but i have wanted to do the manual swap but figured it would just be easier to get a great 5 speed lude shell and get a motor swap and have two lude's. I love Lude's..lol than i could have one for fun and one for A lot of fun..

Yea I might add to that that his lude can burn several well build manuals I know.
and I also do enjoy my auto. It has been great so far. I don't feel any lack of power in it all

Thanks buddy, but thats all the under drive pulley's work , and a well tuned h22 tranny.. and i removed like 100lbs of weight and bypassed the ac and removed the system, and even cut sections of my sub frame to reduce even more weight, just got to take care of things if you want them to run right, but im getting a dyno on the 17th and can't wait to see what it's really got on paper.. i'l post results..

If you're already ripping it out I don't see why you wouldn't do the 5 speed swap, it will last longer, make your lude more fun to drive and if you ever sell it you'll be able to sell it for a little more and much much faster....

I do agree if it's out already and you have the stuff to do it , than do it. it will be much faster than your stock tranny, but not all. also it will not make the car worth anything more but prob less, not everyone wants a 5 speed and with the auto if you did sell it you'll have a larger chance of getting more cause everyone can buy it , not just gear heads or people who want to go fast, you could crack some girl or guys head who don't know anything about a stick but just like the car for double what it's worth, a car guy knowing it was a swap is'nt going to give half what you want. as for my car i got all my stuff from japan, jdm tranny and all so i figured when i did the swap to go with the newest and best so why change for a ****ty high miles american tranny thats been beat up by some kid who was trying to race it.. also it's going to be your car man you do what you want and whatever you feel will fit you, if you plan on haveing it forever than do what you will, if you ever want to sell it keep the auto. you could buy and build a 5th gen 5 speed like new for less than 2500.. just food for thought...If you need motors my boys the leading guy in atlanta and ships all his stuff direct from japan , JEI.. they all have low mile and prob get the motor and tranny for 1500-2000 and find a shell for cheap, I've seen some for like 500-800 even cheaper , and you got your race car..
