Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

what would a Fidanza 8lb Flywheel do?

Re: Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

It would spin around bolted to the end of your crankshaft...

But really, it cuts out some of the weight that the motor has to move when you want it to rev up. Long story short, your motor revs quicker. There is one major drawback - its a little bit harder to just "cruise". What I mean by this is that because there is so little spinning weight on the motor, you will have a harder time working the clutch.

Think of it in practice-

Whats easier to spin a golf ball (8lb flywheel) or a bowling ball(stock flywheel)? Obviously, it's easier to get the golf ball spinning.
Now when you release the clutch, its almost like were trying to stop the spinning flywheel - so back to our analogy.
What would be easier to stop a golf ball (8lb flywheel) or a bowling ball(stock flywheel)? Obviously, it's easier to grab the golf ball and stop it from spinning. If you grab the bowling ball when its spinning fast, you might break a finger or 2.

Re: Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

My car supposedly has a lightweight flywheel, of course, whenever I say my car "supposedly" has something in it, it means I have absolutely no idea and it's prolly bull****. So I can't tell you what one feels like, cuz mine might be stock, it might not be.

Anywho...a lightweight flywheel has less inertia, and therefor is easier to get going and get stopping. It allows the car to rev up and down quicker, because it doesn't have to move so much weight.

How a lightweight flywheel works

All that info is for Bimmer's, but the same principles apply. Read that and then tell me you don't want one.

Just buy a new car. Jeeeesus. lol

Don't worry man. You'll get everything sorted out. Prelude owners are notorious for a loyal (sometimes TOO loyal) commitment to our cars. That's why we're the best enthusiasts around.

Tell me about it. I'm uber anal about my car, and when my anal-ness rears its ugly head, my dad's like "its just a used beater" it's like he smacked me in the face. You do not say that about a lude.

And my buddy who owns a lude told me today he's selling it. I was speechless. He's buying some kind of nissan I think... pfft.

Re: Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

Yeah what I think I'll do is just fix my engine for now, take the rest of my dough and store it in a big mayonaisse jar, then keep adding to it til I get out of college, and by then I'll have enough money to buy a new engine AND build it up. New cams, crank, valves, pistons, the whole shebang. Maybe even some boost

Re: Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

A friend of mine has an 8lb flywheel in his turbo Mazda Familia, and as stated, the thing revs up incredibly quickly. though it does lose momentum just as quick - if you're accellerating to the highway speed limit, then get off the throttle the feeling is similar to hitting a brick wall - you get quite literally thrown forward in your seat. But I think the benifits outweigh the drawbacks.

not harder, just different. it's not like you're going to stall all the time... unless you never learned how to really drive a stick.

Re: Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

how's the low end power with a lightweight flywheel ?

I've heard that it reduces torque, I like how a stock lude pulls from 3K to 5K, I wonder if the feeling's the same with a 8lb

Actually less weight to spin would give you more torque I would think.

I read.

I was just wondering since I heard people say it makes the car loose torque, some others say completly the oposite.

Re: Fidanza 8lb Flywheel

A lighter flywheel will not cause you to lose torque. That is retarded. The flywheel has nothing to do with how much torque makes it to the wheels. Just get it and be done with it, it's worth it.
