Re: My ac stinks

1st would be to replace your in-cabin air filters. If that doesn't get rid of it completely try a squash behind the filters.

If all else fails try a bomb.

I heard on car talk that the drain that suppose to flush out condensed water from ac can be clogged causing the smell.. Where's that drain? Anyone?

Re: My ac stinks

Turn the AC on high with the air pulling from outside the vehicle rather than circulating inside, and spray some nice scented Lysol in the air vents between the bottom of your windshield and hood. Do that again once the Lysol smell starts to fade and hopefully that would have killed whatever bacteria is starting to grow now that the weather is warming up.

Re: My ac stinks

according to the shop i took it to they replaced the fliter. it was there for the tranny rebuild and i didnt deal with it while it was in the shop for that due to 2 jobs and school full time, so they lied. im not surpirsed and i never followed up on it to be honest. accordng to them it never showed up on my bill b.c i had a credit due to them over charging on a prior visit. so idk where the smell is coming from. when it came back from the shop the smell was gone and just recently came back 2 yrs later.

BINGO!

There is another common problem that most people don't think about, organic material gets down into this vent/air intake area and sits there and rots. You need to take this piece off and clean it out of all the dead, rotting leaves, and Gawd knows what else is in there growing.

so.. remove the vent area between front windshield and the hood and clean out all CRAP in there. (is this something easy?)

once it's clean, do the "turn on A/C and sprey anti-odor stuff"?

Exacary... and if you can, clean it out with clorox to kill any existing bacteria... that's more than likely what is causing the smell...

Then progressivly, changing filters and cleaning out the vents in the cabin is the next logical step.

Re: My ac stinks

noo its not take your time, theres a whole bunch of little round clips try not to break them or your fuked and water will get in and sit there.

i took that off when i did my 5spd swap to put the bolt to hold the pedal up and broke some clips, but i got around it so water doesnt get in.

listen to her, she has good advice.

any time you have moisture in a dark area (I.E. an ac evaporator coil), you run the chance of mold, mildew, bacteria, and odors making their presence known. I have plenty of products to remedy this as HVAC is my profession, but mostly all of them aren't available to the general public.
clean it with bleach if you can (1 part bleach, 5 parts water, and keep it away from your interior!)
use lysol or any bacterial eliminating spray by pulling it through the ac system from outside the car.

Re: My ac stinks

The evaporator coil/heater core (I need to brush up on my hvac) works like a cabin air filter. Thats not really its purpose, but it does it anyway. Its good like that. Basically its cold, and hot air blows across it. This creates moisture, which helps to trap dust particles and such. This then drains out your evaporator drain, which is hard to see but its underneath the car, passenger side. Its really just a rubber hose. Unfortunatly this can also create mold, which will make your car smell like a swamp. They make products you spray in there to kill it, but lysol may work just as good. Just check the bottle and make sure it won't damage plastics.

Also, clean out your evaporator drain. If you can't find it then run the a/c for awhile and then shut the car off. Sooner or later water will drip out of it, so just see where it comes from. Then use a strung out clothes hanger or long pipe cleaner and gently jam it up in there nice and deep now. If this gets clogged, it can lead to the heater core box basically filling up with water, which will slosh around when you make turns and drip all over your passenger floorboard, further making the car smell like swamp.
