Car is on life support. Replace engine or car?

I bought my base (non-SH) 98 Prelude brand new. It is my baby. I have 150K miles on it and it's in good condition. But recently I started noticing a slight shudder while idling. So I took it to the shop (since I know zilch about cars) and was told that it has an "internal engine failure" that cannot be fixed. Seems to be going through about a quart of oil every few days now. So, I can either get a new engine or just get a new car. Since I know nothing about cars I can do none of the work myself. Truth is, I don't even know how to figure out what kind of engine to get to make sure it's compatable with my car. So depressing.

I don't know much about cars either, but it is pretty common for people to do engine swaps. People blow their engine when tuning it. Also raises the resale value of the car. People go for the JDM (Japanese version) of the H22 engine.

get a new motor, or just sell it to me.

replace it with what's already in there. h22, 2.2L VTEC!

+1 Just get a new engine. But with out disrespecting you, did you change your oil frequently? 150k miles and its already goin out? Honda motors last awhile.

Wait, how does replacing a motor raise the value of a car? That's almost like saying modding the motor raises the value of the car. If I was about to buy a car and knew that the motor had been swapped, I'm definitely not paying more than what it's worth according to the miles on the body of the car.

A car with 130k miles and then suddenly has a brand new motor definitely tells you that A) The person didn't really take care of the car B) The person raced the car and blew the first motor or C) Car was stolen and stripped. So dropping a new motor really doesn't raise the value of a car IMO

just my $0.86

Re: Car is on life support. Replace engine or car?

KEEP YOUR LUDE. get a jdm motor..... keep your car running. sell your motor to someone looking to build. jdm motor and tranny = more hp, lsd, and more fun to drive. and yes prelude1897 (brian?) is right... no matter what you do you will never get the money you want for the car. SOOOOO get the swap done.

No offense taken. It's a legit question. But yeah, I kept my oil changed on time. I have all the service records to prove it (not that anyone is asking for it). I think it's just my bad luck. Hell, I had an engine mount break in the car at around 40K miles. But otherwise no real problems with it. I didn't race it either.

I think the car just decided to die because it knows I don't have any money right now. That and the fact it might be mad that my wife just got a new car. The 3rd since I've known her. LOL

Re: Car is on life support. Replace engine or car?

You most likely have minor problems. I have 250k on an H22-A4. Mine is also a '98. I'm sort of in the same boat though. Not knowing how long it will last, is it new engine, or ditch the car?

Re: Car is on life support. Replace engine or car?

screw that. get the motor. i thought everyone on this site knew about cars. oh well. and yeah dont do like i did. i have a prelude now but i had an 06 Civic Si that was drive by wire. the darn thing didnt even have spark plugs. they were like "electronically controled fuel ignitors or something" lame. couldnt do squat to that car with out tuning it and such. if i did the cpu wrong my gas pedal wouldnt even work cause there was no throttle body. just lasers and sensors. do you really wanna deal with all the crap new cars have? push button start? no!
