Re: Timing belt, who's 100k+ with the original belt???

you've been on borrowed time for about 20K miles now. wait a lil bit longer and you won't need a $100 timing belt. you'll need a $1000 engine.

I've heard of some lasting (a friend made 152,000km on his twin cam corolla) and some breaking prematurely, so I'd be doing it as soon as I possibly could.

Re: Timing belt, who's 100k+ with the original belt???

When I got my lude the owner told me the belt was never replaced and it was at 196,789 miles. I only replaced it due to the water pump seal giving out and losing 1.5 gallons of coolant within 15 miles. Your belt is far from giving way but it stretches fubaring your timing. A timing belt is proven to go around 250,000 miles or 6 years before becoming a liability but 100K is to prevent any possibility. If you have oil or coolant on your belt or inside your timing covers it will deteriorate your belt within months keep it in mind.

If I were you I would replace it too make sure you don't require a full head rebuild later on god forbid. Also while your in there I would go ahead and replace your Camshaft oil seal, Crank main oil seal, Front balancer shaft seal, front balancer shaft retaining kit, dipstick tube O-ring, water pump, and Balancer shaft belt. As they are only accessible while balance belt, timing belt, and pulleys are removed.

If you feel inclined a valve lash and distributor timing adjustment wouldn't be out of question. Your valve cover gasket, spark plugs, spark plug wires, spark plug tube seals, distributor oil seal, timing cover gasket, AC-alternator belt, and power steering belt are also recommended around 100K as well. I would only recommend everything if you will be doing the work yourself.

Re: Timing belt, who's 100k+ with the original belt???

im at 134k miles and i drive my lude hard. im changing my timing belt this weekend (just got all the parts and stuff from honda today) every time i hit vtec i think to my self, "dont snap!". its a very disconcearning feeling. honda quoted me $510 to do it, but im doing it myself cause i wanted to change to manual tensioner and wanted to go ahead and finally install my cam gears. (bought them over a year ago. yea, i procrastinate) so i say to you, go ahead and change it man. unless you want a good reason to overhaul your engine.

Re: Timing belt, who's 100k+ with the original belt???

yea i know what you mean, i paid 288 for all my stuff, but if you look at my post "timing belt, sorry to ask" i have prices for the honda OEM parts and for the prices for the water pump, timing and balancer belt (both GATES) from oreilly or auto zone. timing belt can be done for less than $200.

I'll probably get to it in the next two months or so. Prolly picking up all the parts for the manual tensioner swap in a week or two as well. If all fails I'll just have my uncle come help me with it. Shouldn't need to though.

Re: Timing belt, who's 100k+ with the original belt???

I am the second owner of mine. He showed me the reciept where he waited 162,000miles before he changed his!! The mechanic said it still looked good but he knew it was wayyy past due to change it so he did as long with the water pump too. This car was driven by an old man who babied this thing it had 178,000 on the original clutch!!

The car is mint condition and was really babied so chances are the first owner, who had the car for the first 200k, most likely changed it once. But with a 200k engine its probably not a good idea to take any chances.

What he said. Timing belts are strong, really strong. IF you've ever taken one of those steel-belted bastards out of a car and whacked a tree with it, you'd know that they will strip the bark right off. Not only that, but they tend to be spinning at 4000rpm on average, more if you beat on your car. If they snap it could very well mess your engine up, not to mention anything else that gets in its way.

Timing belts should be changed every 60-80k miles. And they aren't like cabin air filters, which you can let go for awhile before you get around to doing it. They cause serious damage if they get worn out and snap.

Re: Timing belt, who's 100k+ with the original belt???

I'm at 128k KM right now but it's on my to-do list for this summer,
I'm experiencing a lack of power ( see the hesitation topic ) so I won't take any chances
