DILEMMA: 5spd manual conversion or new auto transmission?

i have a 1999 prelude with 200,000km or 126,000 miles on it and im lookin for a new transmission. should i rebuild the auto transmission and sell it before the warranty expires or get a 5spd manual swap and keep it for a long time? i really dont want to sell my car but i wanna know if the car has enough life left in it to still perform a 5spd manual conversion and drive it for a long time. im wondering how long would the car last me if i do all the proper maintenance on time and never abuse it.

what would you do?

Re: DILEMMA: 5spd manual conversion or new auto transmission?

Not as long as you do everything write-up. There are literally probably hundreds of write-ups out there for it. Just take your time, do it right, and you'll be very happy with the end result. And 126k miles ain't ****. That's barely broken in.

Re: DILEMMA: 5spd manual conversion or new auto transmission?

My pos prelude gave in after 300k miles- no real rebuilds just regular maintence. Still goes but the headgasket is shot and its on cinderblocks

They'll go for a very, very long time if they were/ are maintened. So 126k doesnt seem like alot at all. I would do it, the new auto tranny would most likely fail earlier anyways

x9999999999999999

swap!!! if you have the money etc.

you'll be happier and wont worry about messing your car up as long as you keep it maintained.

there are plenty of write ups like the ones in my sig, they help in most ways and have 99% of your answers and DIY.

part- shouldnt cost you more then 1000-1500
labor- DIY or pay anywhere from 1000-2000 in labor maybe more depends on the shops and such
time- not more the 6 hours or a day's worth of work taking breaks and such

check the forums people tend to have the swap complete for sale i know on prelude power . com, one person is selling complete everything you need i mean every bolt and nut and screw!!!

There is no guarantee for anything especially if it has that many miles on it. If you have the maintenance done it should last, but your talking about a pretty hefty exspense of doing a 5 speed swap. Now lets say you get it done and the motor goes just a month or two later, I guess you can find another one and put it in, if that car is worth it to you then I would say yes do the swap. If not then look around I bet you can sell your auto buy a 5sp and you'll probably come out with a lower mileage one to boot.

But then again you did say yours has 200,000 Km. Where are you from because I know most other countries don't keep stuff like we do here in the states to recycle or salvage. Over in other countries they recycle the whole car, so there might not be that many Preludes over that way. Good luck I know you figure it out.

Re: DILEMMA: 5spd manual conversion or new auto transmission?

Dont mean to sound like an ass but this thread should NOT have even been created bc it's obvious as to what the answer is and that is....

Swap out the "+" and "-" for a "1,2,3,4,5" tranny!!!

You'll be fukkin happy you did when that happens bc trust me when I jus had my swap recently done and i can for shizzle my nizzle feel the motha fukkin diffizle!!!

Better pick up and more control!!! You'll love and appreciate your car more once the 5spd swap is done!!! GUARANTEED!!!

Re: DILEMMA: 5spd manual conversion or new auto transmission?

I got an auto to manual swap done. My auto tranny blew 3x, first initial rebuild cost me 2500 dollars with a 3 year warranty, and within that warranty it broke 3 more times. I BABIED it and didn't even use the sport shift it broke again.

I could of found a used auto tranny and installed on the car for 1000 dollars and sold the piece of **** and wish the best of luck to the next person, but I invested too much time/emotion/money into the prelude so i got my manual swap done for a little more and keep the car, because except for the auto tranny, the car is perfect!

p.s. my car was at 115k miles, i think i can easily reach 200k...
