ROOKIE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help

Brand New Honda owner here! I recently purchased a 1998 Prelude non/SH because it was too good of a deal to pass up. The car only has 68,000 miles on it and the price was ridiculously good. Anyhoo. Now in less than a month I'm a huge fan.

I feel like the only thing I need to do is tint the windows and stay off the gas!

Unfortunately, I am looking at everything imaginable that I can do to this car!

Let's say that I was willing to do some things w/o a goal in mind but the need to squeeze some more power out of this little beauty and still feel like I didn't waste a dime. What would be the obvious and the detrimental. I was thinking AEM V2, Full Exhaust, and chip. Also I want an exhaust that is quieter than stock if possible. I am a V8 guy, not that I'll complain at all about the power this little rocket has. I can't stress about how QUIET I want this car.

Thanks for any input!

Re: ROOKIE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help

I voted exhaust, because you'll see the most power increase here. buy don't go with shiitty ebay megan and dc sport exhaust pieces. buy the right stuff the first time. RMF and SMSP headers are supposed to be the top headers. A friend of mine pulled something like 8whp out of his RMF (on a tune). I also hear good things about hytech tri-y headers but couldn't tell you anything from personal use. They are very popular and I see a lot of good builds using them.

If your looking for a totally quiet exhaust you can use the stock muffler. everyone here will tell you it'll be the bottleneck of your exhaust, but you'll be fine. Header is where you'll pull the power from. You can also go with a twin-loop muffler, they're pretty quiet, but have a little grumble to them.

Best of luck with your new lude

I voted chip/ecu. the ecu would cost 225, from phearable.net but you can reprogram when vtec hits and everything.

i vote a full race 35r turbo kit with a 14 pound waste gate, 73mm throttle body, 4'' piping from down pipe all the back oh and your going to have to mod your stock muffler a little to fit it on.. or if your looking for best bang for your buck and want light mods only then these guys have the right idea^^

Cold Air Intake and Exhaust are always everyones first 2 things they get. There pretty cheap and bolt on (exhaust might need weldin)... i got sum no namebrand intake and straight pipe from the flexpipe back to a MagnaFlow muffler, i feel the difference in power. I never heard of the ones SmoKey was talkin about, but if they add 8whp, go for it, im bout to look those up myself, lol

thats b/c no one spends the extra $$ to actually make good builds. Those are some of the best headers available. I believe RMF and SMSP are both built by order, so its not a mass produced item or anything like that. But they are some of the only true race headers made for ludes.

and if you want real power, save up and go turbo. like whomever up there said. its the most efficient way to make power on a budget. going with a header and cai and all you'll see are small gains.

AEM Cold Air Intake + Apexi Ws2 Catback Exhaust. The Exhaust is sexy. Its not loud at all while doing the speed limit but when you wanna give it a lil go you hear the sporty roar but nothing like a coffee can on there. You can look it up on youtube or if you'd like I can give you a vid in a couple of days after I get my new clutch installed.

you say that, but you have to pay to play. if you want power spend the extra $$$. You could buy the dc sport header 4x over (spend more money than 1 single hytech header) and still make more whp. If it makes you feel any better my new lift kit for my truck is $2300 and I'm only lifting it 3 more inches then where I'm at now. So I'm right there in the same boat brosif. and I'm only 21.

Nope. F22 (a & b) are interchangeable with h23's though. You can also look for headers for h23a vtecs. I'm sure there are some out there.

Sorry should have forewarned you what the price was lookin like. either way, with a nice header, a v2, high flow cat, and throttle body, with a tune I bet you could pull 15-18 ponies at the wheels. or you could turbo it for a little under 2500 and make +100 at the wheels. But your also putting your vehicle in the hands of your tuner. Just remember there is an up and downside to everything.

Why do you have more than one?

I'd bet more than that smokes. The Hytech makes between 7-8 whp with a tune, and the V2 makes 7 whp just bolted on. With just a tune alone you can probably squeeze out a few horses.

I love how we have to spend ~$2500 to nab 20 horsies. lol

Don't spend the big bucks on a HyTech header if you're just going to ditch it down the road when you add bootz.

Exaust of course. (Unless you get a crappy one) has great sound. Decent hp gains. Cold air intakes are good too, but imo not worth the risk. It randomly rains cats dogs and elephants here.

But as far as your question yeah id just keep the stock muffler and open the pipeing. Most exausts have silencer applications also. You could look into that.

That's why you spend the extra $50 on the AEM bypass valve instead of spending $1500 on a new motor. I've driven through some crazy **** with my CAI (filter is COMPLETELY exposed under my car), and have had no problems. You gotta find some pretty deep water and be stupid enough to drive through to have a real problem.

Really? Because last time I checked, 9 horses is not easy to come by at all with our cars.

Worth $300 to me.

Your gonna lose a few ponies from the bypass valve. V2 I heard pulls the most power out of your motor anyway and its not even a cold air. I'm pretty sure it was blake that had a thread on HT

Not sure but I think most of those will only change the HP very little if any. But personally I like the Cold air intake (the sound mostly) exhaust isn't bad either, but when you pop the hood you can see and hear the intake exhaust you have to craw up under the car, exhaust would have been my second choice.

true. im just not a hp guy. seen too many people spend 1000's for a few hp. a old guy once told me. if you want a fast car. buy a fast car and make it faster. i was all like whatever. then he went and got a ram air trans am, turbo charged it and such and got like 1000 horse power from like 5 or 6 hundred. i was like dang. cant argue with that lol.

Re: ROOKIE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help

i think the best way to start off wit is a cold air intake, then follow with headers an exhuast, the basics, then take from there any direction u wanna go lol 2 cents...lip kits, rims, foglights, coilovers to make it look good

Re: ROOKIE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help

why does no one ever mention a short ram? does a cold air get $200 more of power even with the risk involved?

Re: ROOKIE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help

Because for the most part CAI are better (yes, there are exceptions, every motor is different). What would you rather have, colder denser air, or hotter less dense air being pumped into your motor? Colder/denser air = more power.

Nope I don't, sorry. But on our motors, power is at a premium so I'll gladly take anything I can get, even if it's not much.

Re: ROOKIE!!!!!!!!!!!! Please help

very well put, i have also heard good things about the aem v2 intake. i just heard about it and looked into it and i'm going to talk to a gut about it tommaro. its more expensive than the cold air so if its priced right, it should be better.

That's why I said "Yes there are exceptions" earlier, because the AEM V2 makes the most power out of any intake for our cars, and it's a Short Ram. It doesn't make sense, but that's how it goes.
