NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

So i've been happy all week that I'm getting a 98 or 99 Honda Prelude SH (5spd) on saturday as my first car! but my friend had a 99 Prelude SH (5spd) before and he told me not to get it because he had alot of problems with it, including transmission and engine problems. So now i dont know what to do. Any advice? Could it have been that his prelude was one of those cars that just have a bad history???

Re: NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

Well if your getting a SH its not an auto..which is good. The auto's for the 5th gen's are horrible. On the plus side..its a Honda. Honda's are great cars and if you take care of them they take care of you. I own a 01 prelude and I just rolled over 170k and I own a 95 civic that probably has over 220k on it. I have to assume your friends prelude was treated badly and was not taken care of. It is a a car and has alot of mechanical engineering going on. Things are going to happen regardless of the car manufacturer. But Honda's are wonderfull if you take care of them properly and do the required maintence timely.Ask when the last timing belt/water pump was replaced and ask for proof of it. That is a very vital thing on any car. Before you buy it take it to a mechanic you trust and have him look over it and give an opinion. Look into getting a carfax on it. Report back here with pics (interior,exterior, and engine bay) and more info on the car when you can.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

Thanks alot for your information bro, it helped a bunch. Yeah, I forgot to ask the dealership for the water pump/timing belt information. it was on my mind but I must've forgot but i will ask. Both the interior and exterior are really nice. it has 140k miles and its $7000. And it comes with a warranty.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

Check everything. Last time i was going to buy a SH prelude that was lowered for 7 grand but there was an oil leak everywhere. Just bring a mechanic with you.

Re: NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

You can't go wrong with a Prelude, if you were able to i'd look for a Base. I my self have a SH and the only thing I regret is that the clutch just went out and if you don't know how to replace that your self it cost more to repair than a Base. But I still love my baby(;

Re: NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

for 7k make sure it has nothing wrong with it before you buy...and also you can prolly find one for 4.5-6k from a private seller so if i was you i'd look on craigslist or ebay to find some that are near you

Re: NEED ADVICE ON BUY!!

Not going to say buy it or dont buy it but as i said in my first post, if it has been taken care of it will last. I dont think this has been mentioned yet either so, do a compression test and a leak down test if you can. Atleast a compression test. Those 2 will help tell you if the engine is healthy. I know 7k is alot for an older car but honda's hold there value VERY well. I just got my taxes on my 01 and its still $7100 tax value. My 95 civic is a lil over $1500 tax value. But my girlfriend just got her taxes on her 01 Saturn and its just a lil over $1500.
