timing belt, sorry to ask

ok i know, im SURE its been covered on here but ive looked and couldnt find the answers to what i wanna know.
im changing my timing belt either this weekend or next. i need to buy all the parts to complete this. what all needs to be replaced, and other than the auto tensioner is there anything i should upgrade or replace while im in there? can i change just the belt or should i get the timing belt kit from autozone (includes t belt, balance shaft belt, and 2 tensioner pulleys for $190) does honda sell a kit or combo package that will get the job done?
i have the helms manual and access to tools, but i dont think ill be able to get my hands on a crank pulley holder, what will suffice? the closest honda dealership is like 50mins away, so id like to get all my ducks in a row before i start. oh and if there is a good response we should prob separate it and sticky a timing belt thread.

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

Yeah dude with all the problems I've had with my timing belt the past few weeks, I'd recommend it all;

-The 2 belts
-The water pump
-The auto-tensioner w/the bearings
-And unless you have access to a high-torque impact gun, I'd ABSOLUTELY recommend getting that crank pulley tool. I got mine at NAPA for $50, but if you order it online you'll save a few bucks. I seriously did everything I could not to have to buy that tool, from trying to wedge a crowbar between the sway bar and the pulley to stuffing screwdrivers between the pulley and the body. It's worth the $40-$50 if you're doing the job yourself, I promise.

If you try purchasing all these parts separately from local retailers, the auto-tensioner alone at NAPA is ~$160, and with my experience lately, the things are JUNK, so this is the link to the Auto-Manual Tensioner Conversion Kit for the H22 if ever you're interested.

When you get down to the nitty-gritty (assuming the process is similar to the 4th gen's), don't try cutting any corners to get things taken apart quicker;
-Yes, you'll want to unscrew the cruise control actuator from the car and move it aside so that you can loosen the PS and alternator pulleys and to unbolt the motor mount.
-Yes, you'll want to dis-assemble the motor mount so the engine can drop down far enough to let you get the crank pulley tool in there.

Quick tip- If you have larger hands, the 10mm screw nearest the firewall that holds the lower timing belt cover on is a PITMFA, so get your younger sibling or a gear wrench.

Have fun!

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

heres a good topic from PP, Jlude posted up all the parts needed and their part numbers too =)

if you do a manual tensioner like i got.. that kit comes with everything needed its like 89.99, which is actually cheaper than the auto tensioner itself.

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

So when you put the timing belt on after swapping to the manual tensioner do you adjust the belt to the correct tension with it? How does it adjust?

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

Buy the honda parts, they are exspensive but they are the right parts. I tried to get my parts cheap when I did mine but once I got the parts the shop called me and said they were all wrong, I took them back to the auto parts store and they told me that was the parts in their computer so they refunded the wrong parts and I went to the dealer. The only part that was correct was the water pump. as for the parts you will need.

water pump
timing belt
balance shaft belt
auto tensioner (that sucker is $$$)
I would do cam seals and since the crank pulley will come off I suggest a front main seal
valve cover gasket set

thats about it but if that work is being done I would also replace the drive belts(alternator, p. steering, and AC)

I took my lude to a local shop as the guy there is an old honda mechanic, and knows his hondas. Plus it was the middle of winter and snow on the ground. There was no way I was lying in the snow doing a timing belt job in 26 degree weather.

Good luck, also pay close attention to when you are putting the belt on and setting the cams. They have little holes that you can take a dowl and hold them in place (I used some nails I had lying around one time) while you line everything up. Its hard to do with only two hands. Cause one of the cams will lie flat and the other will be compressing the valve springs a little so you'll have to keep tension on that while you place the belt on all the gears.

Good luck bro...

I'm installing my conversion kit tomorrow, and if I remember correctly the manual tensioner needs to be torqued down to 40 ft-lbs. I'm on my phone right now so I can't double check, maybe someone can confirm..

timing belts are a PITA to change, so take your time
either way your gunna need the cp tool or a impact, no way around it,
then your gunna have to take a lot of crap off and move it out of your way to have a tiny space to work
valve cover
ps pump
egine mount "make sure u have the rnginr supported on something"
timing belt covers<======= these are a PITA too
and have fun with tightening the belts

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

so everyone knows, if youre looking to change your timing belt and want to do the manual conversion swap, prices are as follows
manual conversion 101 shipped
water pump OEM 107
timing belt OEM 83
balance belt OEM 54
cam seals OEM 9
front main seal OEM 3
valve cover gasket and spark plug grommets OEM 26

bringing the grand total to $372

now you can save some $$ by getting the
water pump new at oreillys for 63 w lifetime warranty
timing belt (gates) for 61
balance belt (gates) 18
bringing that total to $270
price honda quoted me to change my timing belt $510
but thats not including the conversion. so ordering parts this week, tackling timing belt next weekend. anyone in the central louisiana area wanna help?

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

Haha touche.

The Mitchell's manual I have says the timing belt adjusting bolt needs to be put at 49 Ft-lbs. The new bolt you get with the kit has some lock-tight on it, so out of paranoia, I put more lock-tight on it and set it at 52 ft-lbs. The nut that goes on that needs to be set at 33 ft-lbs..I put it at 38 with no lock-tight.

Re: timing belt, sorry to ask

holy crap. worked about 6 hours today and so far i have taken everything apart, and installed manual tensioner parts. now i see why honda quoted $500 to do this. the lower cover was a bitch. timing belt was in pretty good shape but has signs of rubbing the edge against the back cover. good news is that i had to take of alternator, so i FINALLY installed my blue AEM tru power alternator pulley. i had to take off cam gears (also a bitch) to remove water pump so im FINALLY installing blue aem tru time cam gears.

how do i get that front main seal out? the one on the crank.
and why did the tensioner swap kit come with that adjuster plate but on the write ups on how to do the swap, nobody uses the plate?
