and the bad luck continues

so I'm driving home and the unmistakenable smell of radiator fluid starts to fill the inside of my car. I look at my temp needle and if it were any closer to the h it would break off. It starts to backfire on decel so I decided to pull over and park. And just as a I park it starts to pour. Thanks you florida now I can't even check to see what caused the leak and I have to sit in my car with no ac so it can cool and I can go home b.c I'm far enough to where I had to stop but if it cools I'll make it I assme the backfire is due to the overheating ? I never heard the 2 problems going to gether but the car has never done it til now. And I would do research but I'm on my cell phone so it's a little difficult lol

Re: and the bad luck continues

if you let it get that hot, theres a chance that you warped the head or blew a headgasket. always keep any eye on that temp gauge during the summer. it sounds like your fan wasnt kicking on.

Re: and the bad luck continues

^^i really hope not. when I got a chance to look at it the plastic that connected my upper hose to the radiator was broken. And there was fluid all over the place. The rest of the plastic all around the radiator seems to be inpretty bad shape too so I will be replacing if there isn't any worse damage

Re: and the bad luck continues

hopefully its only a busted radiator. you can buy an aftermarket aluminum koyo or fluidyne for not too expensive, and if you want/need to, new upper/lower rad hoses too.

Re: and the bad luck continues

the easiest way to figure out if you did is to do a simple compression test. that should give you a pretty good idea, also check to make sure your oil isnt a milky color.

Re: and the bad luck continues

If you clean the area off really good like get it dry and use acetone and wipe the cracked area down with the acetone and let dry. Then use JB weld that stuff is great. I patched my cousin's CRX radiator like this and it never had trouble again. Those stock radiators are not made of much I think one of my cousin's friends just had a hand over the part of the radiator where the mount was that has the rummer gromlet that hold the radiator on and I guess he was putting all his weight on it and cracked the radiator. If you drive around with that engine that hot, yeah its a good chance you can warp the head, its aluminum not steel.

Its not a motor problem, its a radiator problem. The H22 is a well built motor no manufacturer can some close to the mileage you can get if you keep the maintenance up, well Toyota isn't too bad either but seriosly this is not an H22 problem. If you build a "project car" thats what it is if you start building this thing to a standard for what it was not intended to do then you are going to run into problems. but this problem is only a radiator.

i would have to agree. things on cars go bad go bad and get old. this time it was just my radiator at the worst time but still just a radiator. my lude is 12 yrs old these things happen but my motor has never failed me 112+ mile and still going strong. yeah its had its oil leaks but again its old so leaks are bound to happen. its just a matter of fixing it and maintaining it.

Re: and the bad luck continues

I jus had my coolant issues repaired last weekend!!! I thought it was my drain plug that was worn out and was leaking from there but when I looked under it was leaking by the tranny and axle. The thermostat area was dry n clean n the rad itself was dry aswell.

Turns out the part of the lower rad hose that comes up and runs beside the dizzy had a huge fold which most likely leads to the inner wall is cracked and somewhere along the fold there was a puncture.

So basically everytime I gased hard to force the coolant to circulate faster it would push out through that hole and leak all over!!!

New hose and new coolant and now I'm good to go for the Tri-state Meet this Saturday!!!

why? these cars are so reliable as long as theyre taken care of. as with anything else in life. dont keep up on a house' maintenence, and it falls apart, same with a car
